Skip's Ten Best Ways to Stop Global Warming Everyone wants to do their part to stop Global Warming. But most people are unwilling to make the sacrifices necessary to achieve this urgent goal, even though our very existence is threatened. So I've compiled a list of the 10 best things ANYONE can do stop Global Warming. These are in order from the most effective first. #1 - Stop having Children! This will prevent any more "consumers" from being created and adding more "carbon footprints" to an already overburdened planet. #2 - Stop Consuming! You've been programmed your whole life to consume products made by corporations. Stop buying shit you really don't need. Make what you can yourself, or buy from other small cottage industries instead of corporations. Stop Buying and Using Plastic! Most plastic is made from fossil fuels, and as oil prices go sky high, so does the price of plastic. #3 - Don't Go Anywhere! Unless you must, of course. Unnecessary trips in any type of fossil fuel consuming vehicle adds to greenhouse gases. #4 - Use Alternative Energy Sources! Solar and Wind generated (green) power is now more widespread and getting cheaper all the time. Add a green power source to your residence, get off the grid and pay less for electricity or generate enough so that the electric company must pay you! Imagine, if you are contributing MORE green energy to the system than you are using, you have a negative carbon footprint, and must be some kind of eco-hero! #5 - Use Mass Transport! Leave your car at home and commute via mass transport in cities and suburbs. #6 - Insulate! Check the insulation in your dwelling and add more. Insulate yourself by wearing more clothes and turning down the thermostat on cold days. #7 - Buy Local! Try to limit your purchases to items produced in your local area, state or country. Stop buying imports that must shipped long distances. Stop driving long distances just to shop - use the Internet! #8 - Telecommute! Stop driving to work at all and work at home if possible. If you can't do it everyday, do it when you can. #9 - Teach Your Children! The better educated they are about Global Warming and green alternatives, the smaller their carbon footprint will be. #10 - Stop Eating Meat! It's not just about methane emissions from cows. It's about the loss of native forests (which go up in smoke) for more pastures. It's about feeding ten times more protein to animals than those animals yield. It's about huge industrial farms that grow only animal feeds. And factory farms that raise animals in unhealthy conditions. What a waste of precious resources so you can chow a burger! I realize most people are unwilling or unable to make all these sacrifices. Yet we are all going to have give up something we are programmed to do and find other ways of fulfilling our needs and wants. Which things are you already doing, and which will you commit yourself to doing now?
That's a good list, only problem I can see is, as you said most people wont give a shit enough to change their lifestyle and sacrifice anything but I've been guilty of that myself, it was only recently I changed my "fuck the world I'll do what I want I don't care" attitude that a lot of people seem to have
I don't have a car on campus- I live on campus and if I don't want to walk to class, I can take a bus. I don't get why people need to bring their cars on campus. There are very few parking spots and it's very easy to get a $50+ ticket for parking in the wrong spot or even getting your car towed. Seriously, why have a car on campus unless a) you drove to school from a different state or b) you have to travel outside the city on a regular basis. That I can understand, but people who live in the city & don't take a bus to campus? I don't get that. The city buses are free if you have your student ID and campus buses are free for everyone. Plus, on some streets traffic gets so bad it's faster to walk than to drive. Peace and love
Uhhh.... the legalization, mass production, and regulation of HEMP would solve a majority of those problems like fuel. Hemp would make an excellent and cheap fuel that wouldn't emit all those harmful toxins that oil and gas emit. thats just one of thousands helpfull things that hemp could contribute to the environment. I can list plenty more if you'd like? =)
Not trying to start an argument. However I don't think we have any impact on our climate. And those who say we do (re:Al Gore) are only trying to make money off something that is a naturally occurring cycle. That being said. I am all for not having children, as more people equals more strain on our already crumbling infrastructure and dwindling resources. As for the number of kids a family should have. I'd go with one, any more should be immediately aborted. Same goes for single parents (Would certainly cut down on poverty), and people with histories of having mentally handicapped children (Downs syndrome and Autism for example)
Nor am I trying to start an argument, but I was looking through my science book just the other day and I came across an infra-red picture of our o-zone layer. It was a side by side comparision of our o-zone today and 50 years ago. You wouldn't believe how much of our o-zone has thinned out and even over some of the major citys on the globe, the o-zone was almost completely dissolved. I think that I have lived long enough to see a noticable difference in the climate changes. I remember when I was very young, it snowed every winter here. Well it hasn't snowed here in the past 5 years. So there is too many un-answered questions about our climate changes to consider the abuse we put on our planet to not be one of the reasons.
I really like this Skip. It looks very simple as a list like that, and also it allows people to take individual action/responsibility for their choices while it still gives them some options to work around and at least acknowledge their own contributions. Well done Skip! And thank you very much for sharing. I really like this post. I'm going to spread it around.
I would flip the order and make #10 into #1. Giving up meat has more impact than changing mode of transportation and is so easy. No sacrafice or extra effort involved at all.
Yes, I was thinking along similar lines, but when you measure the actual daily impact of driving a car to work or shopping, and the resources involved to do that, vs. eating a hamburger, I'm pretty sure getting the fuel to your car (and your car to the fuel!) uses more non-renewable energy and pollutes more than a simple burger would. Of course driving to McDonald's to buy a burger to eat, has to be far worse! If we all grew our own food, then that would solve both problems!
I would like to add #11 to this list, if I may be so bold. #11 - Be and Advocate For Change! Whether you are putting pressure on your local municipality to push for curb-side compost services, a ban on pesticides use in your community, participating in a protest over commercial land claim authority or signing that petition as you walk by on the street, you are capable of making enviromental conscious lifestyle changes law and formal policy by being an advocate for the change that you wish to see others participating in around you. Thank you Skip. I don't mean for this to be added to the list per se, but I think it's an important step for everyone to get your message out there, not be afraid to show just how motivating and driven a person can be to their community.
http://www.goveg.com/environment-globalwarming.asp Actually, raising animals for food produces more GHG than all transportation combined, when you look at the entire process. Besides-I already have a kid! Can't undo that one-lol!
1. Won't be having children, ever! 2. I am very tight with money and only buy neccesities. 3. I travel 90% by bike. 4. can't say I've achieved this one yet 5. Use the bus whenever possible for long distance. 6. I wear a jacket indoors and rarely use the heater. 7. I try to shop local whenever possible. 8. I bike back and forth to work. 9. No children to teach, but I do try to educate friends. 10. Vegetarian!
the reality of the situation is that people don't really have to change their lifestyles that much provided that things were done properly. if government money was spent doing something all our problems would be solved hot water would be created by the sun electricity would be created by sun/ wind/ ocean everyone could still drive around in their cars for a fraction of the cost if most vehicles were electric (see the film "who killed the electric car") population control is a state of mind - its all very politically incorrect stuff.
they know they just don't care just like most non americans it takes a disaster on a grandscale not just a blip like new orleans. it will take something like "the day after tomorrow" for the average person to evaluate how and what their vast tax dollars are spent on. if america had spent the money on renewables instead of the iraq war..........
Yes, I think one trillion dollars would've bought every American a Green Power source and put us at the forefront of Green technology in the world. We would've reduced our reliance on imported energy by 50% by now. Gas prices would've DROPPED instead of rising (oh but the oil company execs wouldn't be raking in hundreds of millions a year would they?)
i think its too late to do much basically a fifth column has taken residence in the halls of power the christians of america are a major voting force as long as they vote with their bible instead of their brains america is going to have a problem. theocracies hate free speech, and thought, and the love of liberty, for the americans it will only get worse. well for some anyway.
hmm, a good list. But number 10 is wrong. An acre of grass actually consumes more greenhouse gas than an acre of trees. If we truly wanted to end global warming we would cut down all the trees and plant grasses. http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?chanID=sa003&articleID=DCA231BA-E7F2-99DF-3105874539B83ECB&ref=rss http://www.usatoday.com/news/science/2002-08-07-global-warming_x.htm But I'm not supporting beef farming (I stopped eating beef for a multitude of reasons), because methane release is indeed a major problem.
1. No, sorry. i will have children if i desire. there is no possible way to effectively prevent humans from recreating. 2.Nope. I will buy and consume things as long as i live to help the economy. 3.Don't go anywhere?? this is ridiculous and doesn't deserve a response in our modern world. 4. Absolute nonsense. In almost all cases, alternative sources cost MANY times as much as whats being used now. For example.... liberals are pressing for lightbulbs that save energy, when these lightbulbs save no money....even in the long run. 5. No. Inconvenient and crowded. 6. MAYBE. just for my own comfort and money saving. 7. Am i supposed to check each item before purchasing? And I do order things online. but i fail to see how that saves energy, when items have to be processed at mail offices and driven to each person (especially when said person lives in the middle of nowhere) 8. ? No one would get anything done if this was the case! 9. No. I will absolutely not infuse my childrens' mind with this "green" crap that we are being fed everyday. 10. Now this one amazes me! Don't eat meat? These resources that "we are wasting" provide millions of burgers and protein for millions of humans, not just me. .. I would put my anti-global warming "propaganda" in its respective thread. BUT, this webmaster labeled all of the REASONABLE and LOGICAL sound advice in that thread as "propaganda", thus deeming it garbage. SKIP, i really dont think your doing your job as a webmaster in this instance. These points are entirely foolish and in most cases save neither money nor resources when looking at the big picture with a logical mindset. You can't just take "all the money from the iraq war" and spend the entirety on "green" resources! The ignorance of some people astounds me! Note that i did not flame anyone, or post anything inappropriate.
