Okay...I know that I want to be a high school history teacher, and I'll probably stay here in Tennessee for a while. But that's all I really know. Who knows where I start and what kinds of classes I have to take and how hard it will be, along with all the certification stuff, etc?? I know I can get all this info from a counselor somewhere, but I wanted to know if anyone knew firsthand what kind of experience it is and everything. What is teaching like? How can I be friendly but authoritative at the same time, and, most importantly, how do I teach them about more than history? My favorite teachers were the ones that helped us understand more about the real world and look beyond the stupid trivial bullshit that is high school.... :D

i am also going to be a teacher. i'm just starting the process too. actually, yesterday i went to see an academic advisor at the university about this exact issue... what classes to sign up for, etc.. so yes, talk to an advisor, and they will lay out what you need to do.

i am in some introduction-to-education classes right now at the community college, and they have been very helpful in preparing me for the realities of teaching, and how to get through the beaurocracy to the place where teaching becomes a satisfying service to humanity.

once you get into these classes, your path will become more clear, and it will slowly define itself as you go along.

so good luck on your journey. the world certainly needs more kind teachers!
