so, fellow stoners, today is a wonderful day.... it's sunday, and i'm off of work, and i have good pot...its a day of celebration and rest and festivities, even if i want to stay home by myself for most of it. one of the best things about sunday is sunday dinner. i plan to smoke a full bongload or of this pot (some of the best stuff i've ever purchased myself...allegedly sensi star, but for all i care just DAMN good pot) just for an appetizer, and have gone out and purchased some good beers for dinner, too. my family traditionally ate sunday dinner around 1 or 2 in the afternoon as a huge lunch, and then if we were hungry in the evening we'd just snack. but today my food will be ready around 5 or 6. in the crockpot right now are the following ingredients for a beef stew i'm making: ~1-1.5lb beef cut in cubes 7 russet potatoes chopped ~3/4 of a bag of baby carrots 1 jar of green peas 3 large shallots, chopped 3 cloves garlic, chopped ~.5c V8 ~1c Monschoff Kellerbrau 1 cube chicken boullion chilli powder fresh ground cumin black pepper it will be salted to taste when its done, as the jarred peas, V8 and chicken boullion will all add some level of salt already and i want to taste it before adding any so i dont overdo it. if the moisture gets too low, a small quantity of water will be added. but it is almost an impossibility its been a long, long time since i've made beef stew, and i've never made anything with shallots before. i am using them in place of the red onions i'd normally use. the spices are a bit different from what i'd normally include, too, but i think it will come out pretty nicely. it smells great. though had my normal seasonings been available, it probably would be flavored more with rosemary and time and such rather than chili powder and cumin....but it will be great anyway along with a massive pot of stew in the slow cooker, i bought four bottles of beer today and am on my second one....the other two are for tonight. i opened the first one, a 500ml bottle of kellerbrau (a type of sweet but well balanced unfiltered german lager) most of it was consumed as is, but a small amount of the bottle was put in the stew. i'm now about halfway through a bottle of another german beer, Georg Schneider's Wiesen Edel-Weisse....an organic german hefeweizen of extraordinary quality for later i have a 750ml bottle of a long-time favorite, foret, which is allegedly the only certified organic belgian ale...it's also my all time favorite example of a saison beer, and in my eyes is virtually perfect in every way. along with this i have an 11.2oz bottle of westmalle tripel, a genuine trappist ale, which i dont believe i've ever tasted before. today will be full of good eating, good drinking, and good smoking. so what are you having, or what have you already had for YOUR sunday dinner? i want all the mouth-watering details! remember: if you want to be happy, you have to be full
my meal today will likely consist of some bagels and then a salad later on. If im not feeling to lazy i might head out to the store and pick up some bread to make some grilled cheese or something.
i've had plenty of sundays like both of those, but today i wanted to splurge and get a lot of good shit actually, this stew losing too much moisture will not be a problem. if anything, getting it to cook down might be an issue
i think we are having the breakfast we were going to have this morning before dilli went out to the freezer this morning and it had quit working.. yeppers that made for a mad dash to town .. no worries we saved all the food except for some liver an 5 packs of veggies..had to spend 500 bucks on a freezer but ya do what ya gotta do... yeah did i mention we tripped last night?? what a lovely morning,, but i digress.. we are having french toast, home fries and ham..... yummy...
sounds damn delectable, cept the ham (ham is a bastard meat, just like mayonnaise is a bastard condiment ) but french toast and homefries sound so good! i'm pretty hungry and really can't quite wait until this is ready. i may get something to just hold me over
HHB that sounds soooo good. What a great combination of breakfast food too. I'm making sweet and sour meat balls made with frozen meatballs, pineapple chunks, thai chili sauce, and grape jelly over white basmati rice. But since Friday I've been eating my leftover turkey and the best sweet potatoes. I boiled the sweet potatoes, mashed them with half and half, butter, cinnamon and nutmeg. Then spooned them into a dish. Topped with brown sugar and marshmallows. They were sooo good. And my dad kept telling me how my stuffing was the best he ever had. Which was made with stale white bread cubes, egg, chicken stock, carrot-celery-onion, and garlic, fresh sage, and sausage. I stuffed it in the turkey and it really did come out great. And the gravy that I make from scratch was just as delectable. But tonight I don't feel like eating turkey so I'm going to make the meatball dish. I do have a pound of fresh pasta in the fridge though. Maybe i should make swedish meatballs instead? Do you know about trader joes nesta? My freezer is full of some awesome trader joes foods right now. I love going all of their food. I'm not a stew fan, but your dish sounds good. I had been using my slow cooker for awhile there, but I sort of forgot about it. I've made some awesome ribs, and pulled pork recipes in it though. I make my own sauces for them. I love crock pot cooking, but it takes away from my cooking time at night. I've got the munchies already so I better go start....oh it's only 4. nevermind. Sorry for rambling I just love food. Did you see my food blog?
Well the wife and I went out on a date last night to our favorite restaurant Maggianos, so we have a load of spaghetti leftover, thus I am going to make a spaghetti bake. I'm going to chop up the left over chicken parmeasean, mix it and some cheese into the spaghetti, top it with more cheese and bake it. It will be delicious.
thats not so bad then. i'd try it. in general, every ham i've had is pretty lousy, and i seriously dislike it. but i know there is such a thing as good ham (like with anything else, there are tons of factors that go into making it what it is, even what the pig eats...of course i expect that you know all that better than me) i'd try ham if there were something unique about it, something that promises to give me more out of it than the deli ham or baked hams i'm used to.... so then it sounds like you're having a good meal either way, i'm just prejudiced against ham is all....same with bacon....but i do love a good pork roast, and a few other pig products...
You know whatyou should eat with your stew nesta? Snowflake rolls. They are soo delicious. I eat them without butter, and for sandwhiches instead of regular bread sometimes. I just ate one now. They are little puffy rolls with a light coating of flour baked in, and so soft and fresh.
never heard of snowflake rolls, though they do sound good. though in most cases i almost always prefer darker breads. especially really, really dark rye bread
oh, thats probably just because pumpernickel is pretty much one of the most delicious breads ever made and when its toasted and you put garlic butter on it, it's incredible....
i was just thinking about the seasonings that you put into your stew nesta and i hope that it doesnt come out tasting more like chilli then stew LOL. ive never really heard of putting chilli powder and cumin into a stew but i would sure try it. my favorite slow cooker meal is cabbage, potatos, carrots and corrned beef. theres just something about corned beef that i love. my parents like just roasts in the slow cooker but ive never been a fan of roasts they always seem dryed out and hard to eat.
i know the seasonings are atypical but i worked with what i had and it came out good. its nothing like chilli. also not like normal beef stew, but theres no denying its still a beef stew it tastes good
no way dude...get a good pork roast, set it in the crock pot and cover it with crushed black pepper and throw garlic in there. cook it in apple juice to provide moisture...its really fucking delicious
Good taste is what's important. I make a mean spaghetti sauce but apart from steak and a handful of rice dishes, there's not a whole lot I can conjure up reliably outside of basic food prep. I'll have to give your recipe a try.
