UPDATE: Prince Charles and Camilla attacked by student protesters! Students protesting the huge increase in University fees have attacked the car carrying Prince Charles and Camilla, breaking a window and throwing paint.

It looks like the police are rioting in London as students protest huge tuition fee hikes. Thousands of students took to the streets and marched to Parliament as police sought to control their movements. Police on horseback charged the students yet again. Dozens of injuries have been reported as police use their batons on students' heads. Parliament votes tonight on the fee hikes. Estimates put the crowd at 40,000 or more.

the cap on tuition fees charged by British universities would rise from £3,000 to £9,000. In U.S. dollars, that's a nearly $10,000 increase -- from roughly $4,700 to $14,000. That's a lot of money for a full-time student to come up with. At that price only the OLIGARCH's children can afford a higher education without a scholarship.

In other European countries like France and the Netherlands, students get a FREE education!

Is the rise all at once? I mean I don't know about other states but here in CT that's about the average price at a state university for someone not living there(about $9,000 for the full year), but this number is the result of yearly way above inflation tuition rises, not some sudden doubling of tuition.

It is much cheaper then anything over here for sure... but the main fact here is that it TRIPLED...

Think about what would happen if the tuitions in the US (or Canada) tripled...

One thing I'm still not sure on is is this all schools in England or just state schools(or are most universities state schools?) The way the BBC reads makes it seem like this will effect near all schools, so I'm guessing most people there go to public funded/subsidized universities?

Also why is it only in England. I believe Scotland is in control of it's own education system, but the BBC article said even Welsh students going to school in England would be exempt from tuition raises.(Which I find really odd because here in the state university system, if you go to a state school in a state you don't live in your tuition will be basically double that of an in-state resident)

I'm sure they would "dispose" of the lower classes, except for the fact that they need them as slaves otherwise they'd have to work...

in england, the university system and really the whole education system functions on a different system than here in the states. wheras tuition prices over here vary from institution to institution, tuition prices in england are the same nationwide.

also, scotland and wales are independent countries that function under their own government, whereas all of those countries, including ireland, are part of the 'united kingdom.'
