unsure were this is a question, but idas on my thought would be great, so stranger danger, im in aus pic up hitch hikers when i see them, great storys to behold, but most ppl just drive by, due to the brain washing of stranger danger, but if no one talked to strangers were would we be now, there are some wonder full strangers out there but will remain un known if no one is willing to talk to them , down the street when walking by on feet, its not hard to say gaday, so thats my point, and wonderin if its just me or is stranger danger bullshit, thoughts much aprecaited, peace and one love, JJMCG

I don't know about Australia, but here in America if you are anywhere near the interstate you can hitch a ride in an average of 15 minutes up to an hour. With the right appearance, and mannerisms you can easily get a ride and remain safe. That is only for interstate travel. locally we still have a hard time getting a ride. Most people would just expect you to wait for the bus like everyone else.

Im pretty sure "stranger danger" only applies to kids. and still, I do think it is bullshit and dose more harm than good.

Yes, I agree it sets a subconscious social block.

My mom was kidnapped as a teen by a guy when she hitched with her two sisters, and they fought the guy off and got away.
    this was in the 50s.
I only go with strangers when I'm armed. I've been raped before myself.

Watching "The Hitcher" when I was a kid was more of a subconscious block against hitchers.

Though I've never experienced a hitchhiker anyway. If he didn't look like a murderer and looked like I could take him, I'd probably pick him up.

It is normal to be on guard when you meet strangers, at first atleast.

But there are 2 main roads you can choose to follow, along with various minor roads that branch off, depending on the situation.

    But

when you encounter a stranger you can.

A.) avoid him, or make effort to get away and avoid interaction, (most americans, for example, when i hitchhiked for my first time, i was on a small hiway, sticking my thumb out, with my pack and a peaceful demeanor, and about 1 out of 5 cars that passed by, actually switched to the farthest lane away from me once they saw me, and switched back to their normal lane as soon as the were away from me)

    or

B.) interact with the stranger. it is good to stay on guard, depending on the situation. listen to your gut, if shit dont feel right with him, then leave. However, if the stranger isnt a murder or of any danger, then for all we know, you might become friends with the stranger.

    thats my take.

Damn that sucks. But she probably didnt follow the rules of hitching safty. Its good she brought along friends, one of them should of been male.

And its never a bad idea to be armed, just make sure what ever wepon you are carrying is legal.

Stranger Danger is a Real Threat. I was brutely rape and left for dead when I was 17, Hitch Hiking, faught my way out of a few cars since then, but I would not stick out my thumb again. I would just walk to a phone and call a friend or cab or something b4 I would ever stick out my thumb again. With all the Meth heads tweeking out and twisting off at the root, n all the molesters out there now days it's worse then it ever was.
