About SPR

Prisoner rape – and the failure of the government to address it – represents one of the most egregious human rights violations in the U.S. today. With little institutional protection or recourse, victims have been left beaten and bloodied, they have suffered long-term psychological harm, they have been impregnated against their will, and they have contracted HIV.

Our Mission

A national 501(c)(3) human rights organization, Stop Prisoner Rape (SPR) seeks to end sexual violence against men, women, and youth in all forms of detention. SPR has three goals for its work: to push for policies that ensure institutional accountability, to change society’s attitudes toward prisoner rape, and to promote access to resources for survivors of sexual assault behind bars.

Accountability

Although rape behind bars violates international, federal, and state laws, many institutions remain indifferent to the problem. Simple prevention measures are rarely taken, and reports of rape are often ignored. In the worst facilities, victims are repeatedly denied help and even retaliated against while perpetrators act with impunity.

SPR pushes for sound laws and policies that hold detention officials accountable for maintaining safe facilities and respecting basic human rights. By bringing together lawmakers, activists, survivors, and their loved ones, SPR sparks local reform and nationwide change.

Attitudes

Far too many people react to the discussion of prisoner rape with a set of ideas that is inaccurate and unexamined. Some believe that inmates deserve to be raped. Others think that prisoner rape somehow deters crime, or that prisoner rape is irrelevant to their lives, because it happens behind bars. Some even think that prisoner rape is funny.

Each of these ideas is incorrect – dangerously so, but these misconceptions thrive because the public knows very little about the real story. To combat this problem, SPR offers first-hand accounts of abuse from survivors and informed analysis on the issue’s impact on the community. In high-profile media outlets that span the social and political spectrum, SPR is bringing the true face of prisoner rape to light.

Access

All victims of rape suffer in mind, body, and spirit. Unfortunately, few resources exist to help survivors of prisoner rape, who remain a marginalized, drastically underserved population. As the only organization devoted to this issue, survivors and their loved ones frequently turn to SPR for access to vital information and resources.

SPR’s resource materials, written by experts and survivors themselves, help to end the isolation that can be so devastating in the aftermath of abuse. For SPR, promoting access means not only linking survivors to existing mental health and legal services, but also reaching out to encourage providers to serve this neglected population.

This is a great cause, I will check out your link, thanks for posting. Unfortunately, it's an issue that gets way less press than it should, since society doesn't seem to care much for prisoner rights.

No one deserves to be raped in prison, not even a convicted child molester IMO. Prison serves the purpose of punishing and reforming the people in it, it shouldn't be a place where prisoners are permitted to prey on other prisoners, regardless of what they did.

 

LSD - if it wasn't for the rapes I'd be totally nonplussed about jail.

Look at it this way - three meals a day, way better gym than you can get on the outside, free health insurance and use of metal working facilities and free postsecondary education.

how do you plan on doin this when guards turn their back on it? and even encourage it sometimes. i dont give a fuck, dont do the crime and dont go to prison. you know what youre in for. its nice how they take care of the child molesters extra good in there

 

I think you are way wrong with this statement...
If someone touched my child or hurt someone I cared about..they better hope their ass gets raped in jail, that would be minor compared to what I would do to them...
If a child is molested, do you have any idea what long term effects that has on a child??
so i think a chester getting raped in the ass is still minor compared to what should be done to them...
btw, i was a victim of a sex crime when i was younger, and i really hope his ass was raped repeatedly..over and over and over, and hey, maybe even with a broom...

 

rape in prison, prisoner rights?? You commit the crime(s) you do the time!!! I'm sorry but why is it a prisoner has rights and god forbid if they are violated, there's lawsuits, to be filed? But what about the victoms? A murder victom had rights but the con didn't care the child who's innocence was taken the con didn't care, how about all the damn victoms who can't speak for them selves? So why the hell should I care if cons have rights? We in America need to go back to the old ways of Eye for an Eye.!!!! If you steal we cut off your hand, you torture we torture you in the same manner, you take a life, we tkae yours!!! The laws in america anymore seem to be made for the criminals and the pockets of the lawyers anymore. Prisoners get more rights in prison then the avg. person on the street! You can't afford to feed your family 3 meals a day, can't find a job, need free or close to free healthcare, need to work off those extra pounds and tone up, need clean clothes, or coats in the winter and heat, cable, if you answered yes to these then I suggest you commit a crime and do the time, 'cause that's the only way to get it free!!! I know this is long, but..... Prisoner's Rights???? Please don't go there!!!!!

 

Suppose you have a family member who ends up in jail charged with a crime -- it can be a son, brother, or uncle -- and he is forced to stick there until (it is hoped) he is exonerated.

Suppose a male relative of yours commits a crime by accident or ignorance and ends up in jail.

There are many nonviolent offenders who get raped in prison. It seems you really have not thought much about this issue.

Lots of people you would never think would ever go to jail could end up in jail. I had a white-collar female relative end up in jail over something very stupid (she is one of the sweetest people you could meet). In fact, many women are sexually abused behind bars.

 

i understand that but thats prison.. I dont think you can stop people from doing anything whilist in prison.. cant stop them from shanking or making shanks, cant stop them from ass pounding as well...

 

I think you can take steps to prevent a lot of it: for example, segregating nonviolent from violent offenders, adding more security (e.g., cameras), and strictly enforcing the rules (punishing those who break them). I suggest people read SPR's Web site to learn more about the issue. It seems a lot of the people here don't know a lot about the issue.

Well, to do that would mean fulfilling our nation's constitutional obligations, and it would only cost a fraction of what we are spending on the current war.

 

I t'ink a society is judged by how it treats the most vulnerable members of it's society.

you can't do the time don't do the crime, make the minimum security prisons accessible for people other than cops, politicians and celebrities, that'll cut out rape for people who speed


make justice apply to all, and let the prisonors do the things that the justice system is to squeamish to do, some child molestors get shivved in the shower, send the guy that spent his time sharpening his toothbrush a fruit basket with a whole dental care pack....

 

I used to agree with this idea, but I don't anymore, rape in prison should be eliminated, period. Prisoners have rights regardless of what they've (allegedly) done. Besides, prison rape is more a form of dominance, power, and humiliation than it is sexual, and one inmate shouldn't have the opportunity to prey on another in that manner. Plus how are you gonna segregate who gets raped and who doesn't? What do you do, put the pedophiles in the cells with the big guys named Bubba and have the guards turn there heads well ol' Bubba does his thing? That's absurd!

 

I agree that prison rape should be eliminated. Although, I agree that child molester deserve to get killed. The point of the matter is that there are a lot of innocent people in crime. Someone could get framed or be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Any of you guys ever read IN the Belly of the Beast by Jack Henry Abbott?

 

I find it absurd that you think that only in prison rape is about dominance, power and humiliation, when the fact is that ALL RAPE is about that...that is what I dont understand what you are saying.. Rape is very rarely about sex my friend...
