Stories are out today that at least 15 states are wanting to secede from the country. States included are Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, Florida, Louisiana, Texas, Kentucky, North Carolina, North Dakota, Indiana, New York, New Jersey, Colorado, Montana, and Oregon. They have petitions linked to the White House website. They have 30 days to get 25,000 signatures for it to be brought to the presidents attention. What is your opinion on this matter? Do you think there is a good chance this will happen or do you believe it will just cause unnecessary controversy?
just saw a quick thing about this. It apparently isn't 15 states, but rather 15 people have started petitions. The States have not started petitions to secede. What I did notice was a lot of the states that these petitions are from. I wonder how many petition signers wear white robes and hoods at big outdoor meetings, you know where they use those torches shaped like crosses to light the place up? My guess is these petitions are as much racially motivated as much as politically.
I honestly don't believe it is racially motivated. I truly believe it is political. People are living in more poverty than they were 5 years ago.
are you saying that since a little under half of the states are from the south they are all trying to secede because they hate black people?
I read it somewhere a few years back. They made it law after the end of the Civil War to "protect the Union".
Yeah it does sound pretty fucking stupid on the surface of it. But, allow me to expound on my thought process a little and you will understand. Humans have the tendency to always polarize into "us vs them" and automatically vilifies any actions/statements/motives of the opposing group. This dynamic is at play all the time from the kindergarten playground to world government arena. Given that and the fact that there are still a lot of racial issues in the States, I have seen racial prejudice get twisted into the political arena since Obama first announced his candidacy. So what I do see is a lot of morons who jump on the "Hate Obama" wagon not based on his policies, but his race. You know that's correct and I am confident that a lot of the signatures on those petitions at the heart of their motivation to sign is because Obama is black. See it's not that "popular" to declare you hate him based on his race, but if you can find other things to hate him about, valid or not, it helps justify the racial motivation and mask it. Stupid people tend to jump on bandwagons without really doing much research. So I'm gonna say there are a lot of racist who have suddenly become politically active and involved, but it is still their prejudice that is motivating the action, you follow?
there are a ton of other races that are racist. whites are not the only ones that are. there are a lot of white people that are discriminated against. guess what it was over 100 years ago, white people today had nothing to do with it.
and whats the deal? you have to like obama otherwise you are racist???? what about all the people that didnt like bush or clinton or carter, what were they?
As everyone can obviously see, I'm from the south. I am literally surrounded by Obama haters. SURPRISE! I'm not!!! I would bet everything I have had and will ever own that the VAST MAJORITY, if not every single one, of these idiots around here hate Obama like they do because YES, INDEEDY, he is black (actually half black if you want to get all freakin' technical). I know the minds of the people in SC. I also remember quite well the lessons in history...it is illegal to try to secede from "the union". lol The people that came up with this stupidity are morons, everyone. The Civil War (more commonly known here as the War of Northern Aggression) was about the south trying to secede. lol The powers that be put a stop to that secession "nonsense".
There are people hear in my state of Arizona that want to split off the southern half of the state and form the 51 th state . Its called Baja ( lower ) Arizona . http://www.bandersnatch.com/bajaz.htm http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/05/10/baja-arizona-state_n_859954.html?ref=tw http://iamanauthorimustauth.wordpress.com/2011/02/26/southern-arizona-the-51st-state/ desert rat
It will never happen. For one the supreme court made it unconstitutional to secede from the union and no state wants to feel the might of the US military. Two, you have any idea how much money the Fed gives to the states? Enough from them to barely stay sustainable, of which if withdrawn would be disastrous for any state mentioned (even TX, and secession didn't go well for us the first time). Third, no elected officials brought this up nor are they championing it - which means it'll fall on death ears in DC. Also each petition is asking for 25k signatures or in other words a tiny fraction of the population of each of the petitioning states. My educated guess is that the majority of each state petition don't want to secede, therefore it fails. Btw, what money are they gonna use? In god we don't trust, better start printing bills now! Which states tried to secede when Bush, Clinton or Carter took office?! It's indeed absurd to label people who disagree with Obama racist, but lets be clear - tone matters. By the tone of some right wingers, you can easily tell they are trying to delegitimize the president by any means necessary (birthers, muslim POTUS, etc) - the racial undertones are obvious. Even with that said those tones are from a very small, but very loud and vocal group from the right.
No! It's not illegal! That's not possible. They all joined into the Union, of course they could leave! (But they'd have to answer to uncle sam's troops.)
im white, i have worked with so many minortities actually seems like im the minority around here. I went into my job with an open mind and a good attitude and i left the place a little bit racist.
I didn't say illegal, i said unconstitutional of which it is. "The United States Supreme Court ruled unilateral secession unconstitutional while commenting that revolution or consent of the states could lead to a successful secession." There is no such thing as a "right to secession". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secession_in_the_United_States
I don't think that there is anything in the constitution either declaring or forbidding a right to secede by the states I doubt that the supreme court would uphold a secession right though I'm sure many of the folks talking about secession are motivated by racism, but there are quite a few reasons. more generally, polarization sometimes I think that we would have been better off if we had just remained a british colony slavery would have ended much sooner, there would never have been a revolutionary or civil war, and we would have had universal health care a long time ago
