Hey all, I just bought some cheap absinthe. I checked the website for the stuff to see if by any chance it had wormwood in it (thujone content was not noted anywhere on the bottle, but it says it's 110 proof-- whoo!). Anywho, the website says that though it does not contain wormwood, it contains southern wormwood (what they call "wormwood's less bitter cousin" and "petite absinthe") which contains a low thujone content. I still can't find any info on what that content actually is. I'm not worried about getting gyped, because, like I said, the stuff was cheap and I wasn't expecting too much from it anyway (especially since I bought it here in the US). I was just wondering if anyone had ever heard of this southern wormwood and if it's really worth anything at all or just on the label to shut up the people screaming for thujone. Here's where I got my info: http://crillonimporters.com/Entr2-Absente.html http://www.wormwood-absente.com/index.htm
how about you drink it and see? what matters to you is not what is in it, but what the effects are regardless.
Yeah, I was waiting till the weekend (and to get some sugar cubes). I just thought maybe someone would have a review I could check out while I was waiting. Trying really hard to wait, too. I've been looking for absinthe for a year or so, and as soon as I found it, I pounced on it. I've got school, though, and work at 6am every day and if it does something to me, I don't want to have to take time off because of it.
Yeah, the stuff is nothing special. Maybe I didn't have enough of it, but I don't think that's it. I didn't expect much, and in turn, I got nothin'. Oh well. It's tasty, and that's all that really matters to me right now.
I guess if it gets you drunk its not completely a shame I think the herbs should have some effect. I'm soaking various thujone containing herbs in vodka right now, then i'm gonna flavour it with herbs like mint, and some sugar. Hopefully it does something at least.
I hear the best way to go with that is, using 151 proof everclear. I hear 130-150 proof alcohol makes the thujone have more kick somehow. Also you don't have to worry about getting completely wasted from the high proof alcohol before you feel any of the thujones effects, because the thujone somehow cancels out some of the drunkeness.
I'm not a big drinker, though. Not a big fan of getting drunk just to do it. I usually drink things because they taste good and absinthe sounded tasty to me. (Glad I wasn't disappointed there) PS: I heard those make-your-own absinthe things didn't work, but good luck with it anyhow.
^^^^^ Mine worked ok, and it tastes good. It was my own recipe. Its like being drunk normally but it just gives you a bigger kick, and makes you a bit giddier and spacier. Its worth it, but i would like to try real absinthe one day. (Its illegal here). Goddamn, everything is illegal in Australia.
Ya, I guess the REAL absinthe is illegal here, too, but I guess with the southernwood, there's such a tiny amount of thujone in it that the stuff I bought is legal. BTW, the brand name is Absente. PS: Glad the thing worked for ya. I might have to try that someday...
Aww man, I was going to post this before I bought it but I forgot about this site due to silly computer problems. Anyway I bought the Absente and did like 5 shots of it, i felt not so buzzed but sound was... different, this quickly passed cuz I stopped taking shots and quickly became drunk. Is it illegal to order absinthe kits? I want the real wormwood, southern doesnt cut it!
The southern wormwood contains, at best, traces of thujone but not enough to feel any psychoactive effects like real absinthe. And since you bought it in the states - it's definately not absinthe, probably what is called a pastis. What is the name? Pernod, Absente? Those are the most common absinthe wannabes (or pastis if you will) in the US.
Oops... I posted before I read the second page. Yeah, that Absente is bullshit; if you want to get the real shit you have to import, which is fucking expensive.
It's not terribly bad, and is quite worth it. I pay generally, $250 for 3 bottles of my faves, including shipping.
Yeah, it's not too expensive to import three or more bottles, but if your just buying one, then the courier fee alone will probably be as much as the absinthe itself. Damn, all this talk about green fairy is making want to place an order right now!! Gawd I love that shit - maybe it's a good thing absinthe isn't available in the us, cuz I would probably be an absinthe junkie if it was lol Hey sandpedlar, what are some of your favorite absinthes?
Mine are Kubler 53, Monmartre, Verte de Fougerelle, and the Eichelberger Verte 68. I just bought all but the VdF, and with shipping, paid $220. People go on for hours about the Jades, but, for my money, they are too spendy, at over £100 plus courier/bottle. They are certainly special occasion drinks. I also love a lot of the hand-mades that are being distlilled.
If you like absinthe, though, and are looking for a good cheap alternative, I'd go with an arak, and definately not a 'pastis'. Arak, the right brand anyways, can be delightful, and louches nicely.
