Chalk one up for Freedom of Speech! Today the White House responded to two online petitions calling upon the Obama Administration to reject two bills pending before Congress and the Senate. One of those bills, SOPA, the Stop Online Piracy Act is apparently dead now. Instead Obama prefers a more narrowly defined act targeting more specific activities. The White House issued this statement:
Yeah, I got that response today..... Is it me or are the White House petition responses getting harder and harder to sort out? I mean for something that should be coming from a professional writer that thing jumped all over the map. It was very hard to follow. Maybe that's the point, "Keep them confused". I don't know, maybe it's me.
Nothing changed, except the rhetoric. If you believe otherwise, you are way too trusting of government.
Here's how much I trust the government. I sign these damn things. Every time knowing full well I just put myself on some watch list or another. They are getting a pretty big file on me and I'm not doing anything. Clogs their system.
Although SOPA may be "dead". On January 18, 2012, Congress will once again discuss the Stop Online Piracy Act. PIPA On January 18, between 8am and 8pm EST (or 13:00 and 01:00 UTC), Reddit will be blacking out their website in protest of SOPA and PROTECT IP. We request all website administrators worldwide - and especially those running large user-content websites - to black out their website at the same time, to voice their opposition of SOPA and PROTECT IP. Cheers
Hell yeah! But remember people, the fight is !!NOT!! over yet! Whilst SOPA *may* be gone (I dont believe it until I see it ) there is still PIPA to worry about deeply. PIPA is just as bad or perhaps even worse on some points. And knowing the entertainment industry, SOPA will be pushed through... Just not under the name SOPA and probably not in one single bundle. Entertainment industry == tons of money == powerful. They will get it done regardless, all they wanna do now is damage control towards the voters.

The topic thread is incorrect. SOPA is not dead until it either is defeated in the Congress or Obama vetoes it. Obama hinted at a veto, but did not promise it. There is still a very real chance it will be passed.
Exactly. Until we know the bills are gone we should keep up our vigilance. Wikipedia and Reddit are about to go down in protest. It is important to protect intellectual property. However, good intentions are often used as an excuse for tyranny. SOPA/PIPA will allow the blocking of Internet sites without due process. We have seen a similar law that was passed in Australia which, according to lawmakers, would block sites that were involved in the harming of children. What happened in reality is that thousands of sites were blocked for political and otherwise unexplained reasons with no accountability. Expansion of government powers outside of due process is a dangerous thing. Proponents argue the importance of protecting copyrights. However, that's really not the issue at hand here.
Yep, they have a big black page and explanation now with a link to contacting your elected officials if you want to put in your zipcode: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page
Google's main page has a big black stripe going across the top of the page. It's blacked out on my Android phone too. Every single post on all 4chan boards are blacked out.* *implying that's a bad thing

I know it's a small gesture, but yesterday I posted on my Facebook wall that I will deactivate my account for January 18th as a sign of solidarity with all the companies who are doing the same.
Yeah, sorry but I didn't have time to blackout the forums. We support the protest, but why censor everyone here? I'd rather see you guys discussing this today. Plus ppl from overseas can't write their congressmen, can they, so why block them with a message to do that?
