something i'd never heard of before - "international beach code"

so i told my buddy just now about how i'm going to be going on vacation in the keys in a couple months. i mentioned i hoped i'd somehow manage to find some pot when i was there cause i wouldn't take it on the plane, and he told me "i'm not sure if you know this...but theres sort of like an international beach code for finding cool people..."

basically he said if its nighttime and you're chilling on the beach, periodically just raise up your hand and spark your lighter without using it. in the middle of the night, of course, you can see a lighter's spark from a long way away. if someone sparks their lighter back and you see it, approach them and start a conversation and find out if they smoke. he says he's met a lot of cool people this way and that he's had a number of friends who used to use this as a way to find either someone to bum them a cigarette, smoke them up, or hook them up with someone they could buy from.

i've never heard of this, and if i were walking along at night prior to hearing this and someone was just sparking their lighter, i'd just think they were wierd, it wouldnt occur to me to spark mine back as a signal of some sort.

so i'm curious....

have any of you heard of this, and if so, have any of you tried this?

if people actually will spark back, it seems like it would work pretty well. only people who smoke either cigarettes or pot would even have lighters with them on the beach, and only pot smokers would care about trying to flag each other down without being obvious to non-smokers....

right on! like i said, it could potentially work if people would actually do it, it's just i've never heard of it. i do know people who have apparently met people this way, i'm just wondering how common it is, and if anyone else here knows about it......

but if it were an understood signal without being talked about much or too well known, it could potentially be a terrific means of communicating a potentially important message without in any way incriminating or drawing the attention of the wrong person to yourself....

Never heard of it, but in these parts a strobe light turned on in the window of a shop usually means certain 'substances' are available for purchase there.

I wouldn't try it... I don't believe in any universal code. Too many people catch on too fast and many times the wrong person will catch on.

...but it would be pretty sweet if I was just sitting on the beach at night lighting a bowl and I see a little flicker down the beach of someone doing the same thing...

 

the flame isnt as bright as the spark, you'd only need to spark it. it wouldnt waste any gas unless you don't have the dexterity to spin the wheel without also turning on the gas....

anyway, i also wouldnt want it to be anything really well known, but it would be cool if it worked.

 

A lot of times beaches are windy and hard to light lighters. Which is why joints and blunts are for the beach. But I guess if you just spark it thats different. I dont think it would work though, if anything it might attract attention from pigs. Plus down here, esp in the keys, people just walk up to each other and start talking, smoking, whatever. Its really open there. So just find someone that looks cool and ask.

 

thats cool then. either way i probably wont smoke. maybe though, if it's really that open.

seriously though i'm kinda pissed...going on this vacation like 2-3 weeks before i turn 21....laaame....oh well

right on. i doubt it works, but its a cool idea and hell, if people are willing to give it a try, who knows? it could be cool....for a while....like many cool things it would probably begin pretty well but end with a bunch of jerks....

its not like you're wasting fluid or pot or anything, and in my experience narks usually stand out like a sore thumb, and its not likely for people to catch on TOO quickly...

 

im from kansas and havent herd shit bout it, but obviously i live no were an ocean so probly its only heard of like places on coasts
