The entire time men were being pulled up out of the mine the president was standing there with people clapping and singing. There wasn't one body guard near or around him.

Do you think that might be a commentary on their country as opposed to the US? This is still something that I find interesting. In Canada, anyone can walk up to the front doors of the Parliament buildings. You could get away with smoking a doob on the from lawn. You can walk aroung the buildings anytime, day or night.

In the States the White House is fenced in.

These sort of things say something about the mentality of a country.

im guessing they kept the security off camera on purpose. i have a hard time believing the president of any major country would go anywhere without tons of security, regardless of how few enemies the country has

i went on a tour of the white house in the 5th grade. inside and everything. i think it has more to do with how threatened a country is than its mentality. america isn't exactly the most popular nation these days

I'm sure some were there, but there was enough people around him

It's still kind of interesting to see.

The White House tour is very limited. Also, I don't remember the last time a fifth grader tried to shoot a president.

But I understand what you're saying.

Though the fact that they feel threatened tells you something about what they're doing. They know they're pissing a lot of people off.

It does. Not enough people pulling in the same direction. Too many extremes...

there were quite a few chaperones on the tour that weren't 5th graders and i remember the tour being pretty extensive. was a long time ago though.

i'm sure the u.s. government is well aware of its unpopularity and the unpopularity of some of its policies

"no security visible on news footage of chilean president=america is bad" is a bit of a stretch

I think we are fortunate here in Canada as there are no government buildings that you can not walk right up to. Most you can enter without prior arrangements having to be made.

It is a positive statement that the president was able to be there without a security team that was overly visible. To be fair it was a good news story which I am sure made a difference in his security detail.
