...what this 420 thing I keep coming across is, like it's in user names and email addresses and all sorts. I'm a limey so it's totally lost on me. What's the significance of this number? In fact, screw the significance, what does it mean in simple terms?
I have heard a few stories, but I think the true one is based on a group of people in California in the 60s or 70s. They would meet up every day at 4:20 (the most convenient time for all of them) and either smoke or check up on a plant they were growing (I am not sure which). To hide their activities, they just started saying "420" and their friends would know what it means. Somehow it developed from there, April 20th (4/20) has become a smoke out day, so on and so forth... I remember hearing a couple other rumors about how it started, I heard that there are 420 chemicals that you inhale when you burn marijuana, but this was proven untrue. I also heard that 420 was the police code for posession, but this was also proven untrue. If I am incorrect about the origin of 420, someone please feel free to correct me.
like said before, 420 was a time a few friends would meet at their smoking spot. i think their classes ended at 4 and by the time they all met up, it was 4:20. from then on, they just used 420 as a code with their friends that they were gonna smoke. from then, people always smoke at 4:20 pm, some even at 4:20 am. people also always smoke on 4/20 (April 20th). on 4/20, its like the stoner holiday. you just sit around and smoke. the police are usually dicks on this day, so try to advoid having anything with you when you drive and buy early. most people won't sell anything on 4/20 due to the police knowing what it is. so 420 is just a code for smoking pot.
