I left for college about a month ago..... and about three days after I left, my cat of 13 years stopped eating and drinking..... she seems depressed, but she stil acts the same even when I am back home...... we have had her tested at the vet, but it was just the organ screen and according to it, she is fine....... she still is not willingly eating or drinking, my mom has to pour water into her mouth with a dropper..... does this sound like a serious case of depression or do you think there is a health issue going on?

I love this cat to death and i want to take it to the vet for further testing, but we don't have the money to do anything about it...... my mom is convinced that she is going to die, but I think it is just depression and she might need cat prozac........

either way, the shock of me moving away after living together for her entire life has had a horrible impact on her and I don't want anything bad to happen while I am gone, but I do not know what to do......

I would suggest you take some of your clothing that has your scent and send it home so that your cat can sense by smell that you are still thinking of her/him. It may sound weird, but I truly believe that both cats and dogs sense the world mostly through their noses.

I would give this a try before resorting to medication, since cat/dog prozac only covers up the symptoms rather resolving the underlying issue, which is she misses you more than any meow could every express.

Good Luck and Good Thoughts to you....

its 13, i hate to say this but ANIMALS DIE!
sure you leaving may have been a catalyst, but such is life. all things living give up at some point. its just the way it is.

there is no reason to feel the way you feel.its almost a certainty you will watch many other living things just give up and wait to die before you leave this earth.

    so get used to it.

that was a tad rude, hillbilly...... she was a 13 year old INDOOR cat, the lifespan of an indoor cat is usually 15 to 18 years

anyway, today I had to take her to the emergency vets office and found out that she has wet FIP,, which is pretty much a death sentence...... so i had her put down..... it was really sad that she had to go that way, because she seemed like the kind of cat that would live into her 20's until 3 weeks ago..... anyway thanks for all the help

    RIP Taboo

Hey...I'm so very sorry you had to lose your precious Taboo in so tragic a way. It is never easy to lose a loved one and even worse when those who lack compassion give you a hard time about having a genuine loving feeling in your life.

When I was growing up, my little brother, our dog Misty and I found a stray new born kitten while hiking up a stream out in the Los Padres national forest. Of course, it was our Misty Dog, with her remarkable beagle nose that sniffed her out of the bushes and reassured us there were no other kittens from the litter needing rescuing. We brought her home taking turns carrying her in our arms wrapped in my jacket and named her Dorian, since she had the coolest gray thick fur that changed seemed to change colors when she would lay in sunshine.

I still feel blessed that she lived to be 22 years old and that she was a healthy happy cat up until the day she left this earth and even now when I close my eyes, I can still see her face to this very day...

look you asked for advice, just beciuse my advice was blunt and not what you wanted to hear does not make it rude..

and for the record average is just that, some live to be 10.some 20. some 13,some 17.

an average does not mean every cat lives to that age.

Sorry for your loss Sniff. Don't be too hard on HillBilly, what he says is true. But I am glad you were there to guide her to the bridge and wish her farewell.

After you finish college and you're ready to settle down again, you'll be ready for a new pet. Know that, unless its a parrot or giant tortoise or whatever, you're going to outlive it, given the average odds.
