yeah.. that's a good idea. I sure don't hope it's clay or something, cause that's nasty stuff to get out. Generally if dreads are made well, you really do not need anythin sticky to keep them together. But remember: your dreads will only get prettier! I remember on my first day that they were thin, greasy and looked like shiny worms. I am glad I can say it only improves as they get older. I hope you will cherish them ;)

well she told me she didnt couldnt say for sure what it was i dont know if that means that its an old family recipie or something or if she doesnt know, all i do know is that she assured me that its all natural and washes right out, she did it kinda weird too, she backcombed it and it looked all frizzy and you could see individual dreads kinda but they really didnt section off until she put this stuff and rolled it so im thinking i wanna leave it in for a bit cause they might just fall right out if i wash it out, also how often does one need to palm roll?

I palm roll mine in the front almost constantly....its like twisting your hair when you had normal hair..
the ones in the back....usually twice a week or so.

make sure to check the forums for some advice (no wax...essential oils help... sea salt and water.....things of that nature)

yea, i did a lot of reading before i got em so i got some stuff figured out, i got some sea salt/water/lemon juice mixture in a spray bottle but i dont think im gonna use it till i wash this other stuff out but im enjoying em so far the only problem is that theyre all stiff cause of this stuff thats in it, its not like gel thank god but still kinda irksome id wash it out but im afraid they might fall out, i dunno i think im just paranoid cause she definitely backcombed them

it sounds like wax you know. people often melt it before putting it in so it soaks all the way through the dreads, then it hardens and makes them stiff. i really hope that isnt the case.
i would wash you hair right away and try to get it out. whatever it is, it shouldnt be in your hair. your hair doesnt need any product added to it in order to lock up and whatever it is probably isnt good for them.

Hey y'all. Been reading the thread for a really long time now, gathering up info about dreads. I finally did it! I'm so happy with it too. Basically we did was a little back combing and just a whole lot of messing around with different finger techniques. Guess it worked, but I am def gonna need advice from time to time!
I am so happy to be rid of all the gunk and junk that came with having "perfect" hair, and I feel so free. Thanks everyone, If I hadn't been able to read all your posts, I probably would have never done it!
I put a before and after pic on my profile, sorry only have one from the back with the dreads, will def post more as then progress. Wow, that post turned out a lot longer than I planned. Ha, I'll get better at this eventually I guess.
Maybe someone could be so kind as to help me figure out how to post a pic?

get that gunk out of your hair asap. if your hair feels that way, whatever it is can't be good for your baby dreads.

its ok for them to fall out. of course if they are twists held in by wax, they were never going to make it to dreadhood anyway lol

your backcombed dreads WILL fall out in the early stages. it's just how things happen. your hair will know what to do, though. just let it happen and don't worry so much.

if it all falls out, you could do a little backcombing GENTLY to each individual dread to help it stay together. i know a lot of people say this is bad, and i get that, and i agree. however, i found for myself, that my hair is soft and fine and doesn't stick together or knot well at first. so i backcombed pretty much every time after i washed, and eventually it started sticking together better. but yeah, just stay patient, and wash out the goop. goop is never good for dreads!!!

ahw :( that sucks. But I'm happy that you got the stuff out, because I recently heard a story about someone who went to a blackhair salon and they put some strange stuff in it, which wouldn't come out!!! She had to go back there like 3 times and her hair was ruined!
