What are your thoughs on this club? I'm thinking about joining but are they really worth it? I always wonder if these organizations are good for what they say, sometimes there's a lot of dirty dealings you hear about. So I wanted to know if there were any negetive things associated with them.

Seriously? Wow. Well, they're basically the largest environmental activist group in the US (I think), a pretty old club dedicated to conservation. My concern is getting involved in such a group if they are not as positive as they appear on the surface. You know how these big institution-type groups can be, with the shady underside that no one sees. I just wanted to know if anyone had heard anything of that sort and if it was credible.

When I lived in San Francisco in the early 80s I thought it would be great to belong to the Sierra Club. I liked the idea of saving the planet. I, however, am not an outdoors person. I hate the sun, camping, hiking, etc. And when I started getting literature, I felt that the writing they were spewing out was overly critical of businesses and insulting to my intelligence. I offered volunteer work, but if I didn't provide cash the organization didn't seem too interested. Never followed up on them since...

green peace sounds like a good one, even though their founder died recently.

or just start a grassroots organization of your own and save yourself the trouble of finding a truely good group of humans. i bet if you started good one with good intentions you could really get something created, even if your just planting trees or something. the world has so many positions open and available for helping it out right now, just find one you like maybe and go with it. an organization called furthur(named after the merry pranksters bus) is constantly keeping its eyes open to true causes and charities and people who know where their heads are at.

I am a member of the Sierra Club because I am concerned about the enviornment. I believe the government has the duty to protect the natural heritage of the US people, so yes I think a lobbying group like the Sierra Club is very important. The business of lumber cutting and usage can not IMHO be curbed by people just not buying newspapers and books and building houses. There has to be some kind of legistlation that will force people to act responsibly, or a serious education campaign to enlighten the people to the dangers of deforistation and over developement. The Sierra Club is a Left leaning organization. Some say they have a liberal agenda aside from the enviornment; that activists have latched on to their coatails to further their leftist agendas. I still believe, not being a radical liberal myself, that the Sierra Club serves a very important need at this time and thus have my support. They also have local chapters that put up volunteer hikes and outings like cannooing and rock climbing which bring like minded people together. You canget as involved as you feel inclined to do, either by maintaining trails and leading outings, or volunteering in some other manner. I say to you, be a member. The money is well spent in my estimation.

Plus new members get a free backpack. Sounds good to me.

Oh great another left leaning environmental group. I'm a member of WWF but I've heard of Sierra Club and wondered 'bout them too. Never heard that they were left leaning tho, if that's even true. I've supported left leaning environmental groups before and I won't do it again, why must socialist ideals be lumped in with environmental issues as if they are related, they are not. Which will it be, Habitat for Humanity or wildlife habitat conservation???
