So, I helped my dad clean out his father's barn, garage, corn crib, etc...for a huge auction a few weeks ago. My grandfather collected massive amounts of antiques (the word "antique" can be arguable, however, in this situation) and because he is on his deathbed (black lung disease from working in a factory), his last wish was to have an auction of all the stuff he collected throughout fifty years.

I was helping my dad because he was getting virtually no help from his seven brothers and sisters...was I doing it for my grandpa? A little, but not really because my dad's parents really haven't done much for me in the past...and pretty much disowned me at one point.

Well, I just went downstairs and saw an envelope on the table...my birthday isn't for another six months, and there is no holiday coming up...so I open it and inside was a check for $200.00 from my dad's mother. I was drinking a cup of water and I dropped it right on the floor when I read that...

This is a set of grandparents who has never given me more than ten dollars on my birthday and when we had a family Christmas I often got nothing, while everyone else got really nice gifts...It bothered me, but whatever...I came to expect nothing from them...

So I was completely shocked. A part of me wants to send it back...I don't want them to give me any money. I was doing it just to help out my dad. But, I could also use this money because I'm without a job right now (currently looking, but this is a pretty good amount of money).

So should I send it back...or should I keep it?

Keep it. I understand the principle, but principles can often be expensive. Don't let your pride cause you to lose out on something that can appearantly help you substantially in your time of need.

I don't know if you can thank someone enough for that kind of money.

I don't accept gifts very well, I guess.

I'm guessing that was a thank you for your services as opposed to some folks fishing for thanks.

I don't accept gifts very well either, especially when it seems like a handout and not a gift, but sometimes I realize it's necessary to swallow my pride and do what I need to get by.

Like I said, I completely understand the principle, but principles are expensive. Think about whether or not you can realistically afford to give back this money. If you took it because you wanted it that says one thing, but taking it because you need it, even though you'd rather not, sends a far more positive message about yourself.

Keep it. It is in my beliefs that when you lend someone a helping hand or a few bucks, it comes back to you. This $200 very well could just be karma rewarding you for good deeds through a check from your grandma.

Also, you could sorta see it like when you graduate, people you barely even know send you gifts, and even though it's always awkward and weird, you keep them because money's always welcome.

If you need it, swallow your pride, keep it, and write them a short impersonal thank you letter. If your relationship with them isn't too great, you shouldn't worry about mushing up a thank you for them. Maybe this is their apology for the way they treated you in the past.

I think it might hurt their feelings if you didn't keep it. They obviously appreciated it very much and they wanted to let you know. Start a savings account or something if you don't want to blow it right away...

actually 200 is such a small quanity of money to someone who owns property it is ridiculous, with a few exceptions. I think I spend that in Chinese lightbulbs that last bout a few weeks...... for the year.

what comes our way, comes our way. if it isn't a mistake and someone else needs it, put it to good use in the spirit it was given.

remember the good, bad and indefferent ALL come our way, and we aren't ment ONLY to suffer or be bored.

Man, I wish Id recieved gifts from people I barely knew when I gradutaed hs. Just my dad, mom and grandma gave me stuff and even taht was a little unexpected (well, the luggage was expcted, but the rest was a bonus)

Anywyas, keep it. Invest it in something that will gvie you money back when youre done all your postsecondary stuff, rather than spending it now. Itll be a nice little start to post-school life.
