    :(Okay everyone,
People keep asking me if I am going to cut my dreads before court. I started them last October and just recently, in August, got busted with 4 oz. :$In the great fucking state of South Dakota possesion of over an ounce of grass if a felony, it was 2 ounces but they recently changed it to 1. Bunch of bull shit if you ask me. In my police report it describes me as a young female with a fake leg and dreads. It also says that the subject remained to have a smile on her face the entire time. Well court is soon to come for all of this and well I ask the public "Should I cut my dreads". If you want my opinion I really don't want to cut them off. My boyfriend did for his court and he went to the State pen for 75 days for FAILURE TO APPEAR !!!!! I love my hair and they are just starting to get good and tight. But in all aspects the judge might not like my hair fishtail braided with a large flower in my hair. WHAT DO YOU THINK ?:H

i think you should be yourself, sure the judge will have a first impression, but its all how you (or your lawyer) represent your case...maybe give them a trim and just make yourself all neat and tidy, but thats about all you can do. good luck with your case!

How much time could you get for it? If I was ever faced with jail time I would split to another state or stay with relatives in another country I would be some huge chick's bitch in an hour tops if I ever went to jail...I feel for ya let me know how it turns out.

    Same.

I had to go to court and my hair is a ways below my shoulders, I just put it in a ponytail and the judge wasn't picky or anything, but I think I was just lucky because I was one of the first appearing so the judge wasn't tired or pissed and didn't do anything. I don't know about dreads. It all depends on what judge you're going to, obviously. I suppose in this case, hate to say it, it pronably isn't going to make much of a difference if you have 3oz. over a felony charge... but you can always grow hair back, though I can't stand it when you have to be something you're not over some little bullshit charge. They just want to break you and squeeze every dime you've got out of you. I can't really decide for you.

    Hope everything goes well.

Its just hair, but the judge probably won't like it.

    Get one of these.

If I had dreads I would have one of those.

    Someone suggested this hat:

But I think if you live in South Dakota you'd better shear the dreads immediately.
I used to know someone who lived in Sioux Falls.
Not the most enlightened place on the face of the earth.
I've also known a few people who've spent some time in jail.
    Sioux Falls is better.
    Good luck to you.

    Hi J B,
writing this from "old europe", I´m obviously not familiar with US courts, however this is the year 2005 and by now anybody in the "civilized" world should have learned...

...NOT TO JUDGE ANYBODY BY HIS OR HER LOOKS!!!

So, if you don´t want to cut them off - DON´T DO IT!

It´s about time we get back to use common sense in societies.

If you're worried about getting off, cut them.

Stricktly on principal, however, I'm going to say not to cut thm. That's like saying, "We can control you with a simple threat." Is freedom really worth betraying who you are? It's like Henry David Therough, he went to jail over a principal, and although he was physicaly imprisoned, his soul was free.

    My advice, don't cut them!

First off I think you can forget the hat trick most courts insist you take off your hat as a sign of respect, but check with your lawyer both on this particular and as to the wisdom of cutting or not cutting your hair. it's your hair, but it's their game and they've got the guns and the gold at the moment. Good Luck & HUGS

i wouldnt cut mine, but thats just me..but personaly i dont think it would affect your case 1 way or the other & in fact might even give you grounds for an apeal if you do lose your case you could always find cases of others who appeared before the same judge for the same charges & got lesser sentences & use it as grounds for claiming discrimination..
some judges may evn respect you for not being a pandering ass kisser

it really depends on who your judge is...if you know your judge is conservative and stuff..i honestly would..or at least pull them back and put on a scarf..if you really feel attached and dont think it would help your case either way, then just keep them.

Don't do it. What's the worst you can get? You'll have some war stories when you get out.
