...feel an obligation to serve at least one term in the armed forces after 9/11? Why/Why not?

    Fuck. No.
It wasn't their problem. Forced services in the military is absolutely fucked and it's a stupid idea.

We'd become canadas mexicans. If I was an 'able bodied male' I would be out of this shithole so fast you couldn't even bat an eye before I'd be gone.

    No way in hell.

You seem to be forgetting other events like undeclared war in Iraq and the Vietnam war.

Why only the males? That's rather sexist.

Forced military, NO! (I was drafted in 1966). However I would not be opposed to all kids doing a year or two of service work for the country. It could teach skills, clean up the environment or neighborhoods, and maybe instill a sense of public responsibility. Despite the US having glaring problems we have a pretty decent life here and giving back to the country is fair in my opinion. I knew old guys back in the day who worked on the WPA or CCC projects building state parks and lodges, stone bridges, painting murals, that kind of thing. Man, they had pride in doing that stuff. Google Giant City Lodge, Makanda, Illinois and check out the kind of work they did.

I agree with this to a certain extent. I don't think volunteer service should be compulsary, but it should definitely be encouraged. I wish the government would bring the CCC back.

As far as the military, no no and no. To me, that is essentially the government making slaves out of its citizens. Not everyone identifies themselves by their country or feels pride in their country, and thats perfectly fine. For those that do, by all means, join the military. It should always be on a volunteer basis only.

For a fact the military stripped you naked of all vestigages of your young civilian life. You were told you were government property and only a number. I understnd the psychology in back of it but it sure as hell isn't for everyone. The CCC however was a great thing for lots of people and still could be.

The CCC was beneficial on so many levels. Granted, I wasn't around for it, but I've done some reading on it. It boosted the economy by providing work for those that would otherwise be out of work, it gave a sense of purpose to many young men, and it created a sense of pride in country by providing beautiful state and national parks that everyone can enjoy.

They really should bring it back. Instead of giving subsidies to wealthy corporations and giving the same corporations millions of dollars in tax breaks, that money should be diverted to something like the CCC. That would help boost the economy and provide unemployed citizens with work. It would kill many birds with one stone.

    wishful thinking...

I think the Germans have it right. After post-secondary school, they require (or at least until very recently) required those graduating secondary school to we've a year in the military or provide some sort of service. I don't think this would work well in the U.S., however I believe a bunch of youngsters could benefit from
    it.

fuck that, its not the government's job to decide if that would be beneficial for youngsters or not.

    compulsary service=slavery.

fuck no ....... do y'all have any idea how many generations of men have been forced into military service? and in many parts of the world still are?

i consider myself fantastically lucky not to have been one of them :sunny:

as cliched as it is, generations before us fought so we could have the stability to provide ourself with armies so the majority didn't have to fight... enjoy that priviledge

    After 9/11?

That was a couple years ago-especially if you are trying to build a thread based on it-no matter how silly the question

I am an able bodied american male between 18 and 45 and I feel no obligation to serve in the armed forces. I am totally disenchanted with the idea that 9/11 serves as a source of inspiration for one to serve their country and to renew patriotism. The reason being is that America is in fact the most militant country on the globe, and the armed forces are an offensive and destructive force.

No fucking way im signing up after our politicians killed our own fucking people for blood money. If anything those fuckers should be forced to sign up and thrown in the desert with nothing but a water bottle filled with oil. Let them drink the toxic chemical there greed wanted so bad and let them have a painful death.

Fuck the service and fuck the police force.

that's fucking insane! i would never kill another person, especially for the US. the US has to go sticking their noses in everyone's business and then they get pissed off when other countries don't like us. and once one realizes they are not different from any other race and no one country is better than another, you realize that you no longer have any obligations to your country, you realize that you are actually a citizen of the world
