Okay I'm planning on moving to New Zealand in a couple years and I was wondering if anyone knew much about sheep farming. Some of my friends and I talked about starting one and I've been researching but I'd love to talk to someone that's done it. I was probably going to go to school in New Zealand and use the sheep farm as an income. I probably wouldn't hire people, just my friends and a few other people wanting to leave America would run it and we would use the income to pay for our needs. I think it's going to be fun and we're really excited. Anyone know much about this subject?

Do you have a couple of million dollars to invest in a farm?
    Seeing as you're 16, I doubt it.

Sheep farming is not a utopia-style of life. It involves a shit load of hard work and you, being a 16 year old girl from South Carolina, are unlikely to have either the energy to do this or the knowledge to pull it off successfully.

Sorry love, I don't think we can help you.

I'm fairly sure most people I've heard of who do farming need qualifications - places liek Lincon university and Telford rural polytechnic offer 1 - 5 year courses, sometimes longer. After that there are apprenticeships/farm hand jobs...that's probably the best way to go for someone without residence/work permit anyway.

farming is a pretty competitive business, like taylor said NZ aint a utopia of pastoral, nee-luddites...there's health and saftey regulations for a start..

not to shit all over your dream though..um, you could try looking up some NZ government website

My friends and I are investing together, and are going to do this in a couple years after we've had some time to save up some money which hopefully won't be too long as I'm graduating next year.

You underestimate this 16 year old girl from South Carolina. :) Thanks for the optimism though!

haha I'm aware that someone my age wanting to grow up and have a sheep farm doesn't make me sound very intelligent. When I'm determined I can accomplish something though, even if my family does think I'm throwing my life away.

It's extremely difficult to gain residence in NZ. Trust me, I've looked into it...and without being a resident, I'm not sure you can own enough land to have a sheep farm.

Not only that, but if you can't prove you will be an asset to NZ, and you can't prove you will have a good income or a good job...you won't be able to gain permanent residence.

Just show up with a degree and they'll give you farmland to stay.

lmao... no, she's got to be a multi-millionaire famour actor/musician and then she'll be given the cream of our coastal land to build her many-bedroomed mansion on along with its private helipad.

I'm not looking to get rich before or after living in NZ...I'd just like some place in the countryside where I can live in peace.

I wasn't referring to you in truth... I was instead referring to people who have lots of money who come here and buy themselves houses which they live in three weeks out of every year which are always on gorgeous coastlands that no one else even knows are for sale...
but you wouldn't get that, being not a new zealander.

Hay DancerAnnie if you wanted NZ residence, what you could do is to fly downunder for a working backpackers holiday, I could make you pregnent and if you gave birth while you were here, they would have to give you citezneship as you baby would have Australian nationality, the Federal Government would give you a $6000 baby bonus and you baby would inherit my house. In case you are wondering I don't have any children.
