Hey all, I know I missed the boat on this one, but can someone either tell me or point to a reliable source of how Phish decided their setlists? I hear some who say each night was spontaneous, but somehow I can't believe that. Was it a mixture of a few songs they knew they wanted to play (or maybe some jams they had rehearsed that they wanted to find a place for) and then the rest decided at the show? And weren't they plying in Jersey one time on a Tuesday when, for the encore, the decided they wanted to play the Allman's "Tuesday," and someone went out between sets and bought a copy and they learned it in time to play it?
i don't know about the "tuesday" story, but on there 2003/2004 tour they were just deciding what to play on the spot. but like the Dead, they used to say the songs they wanted to play, wrote them down and loosely followed it. sometime new ideas evolved on stage and the setlist is thrown out the window...
Hmm. Okay. Now, does anyone now (or want to speculate on) how much of Coventry was planned and how much was spontaneous? Also, how did the Dead approach their setlists?
