I lost a lot of sleep over that. (Man I used to look hot in leather! ooowah ) But then I began looking at it as if it were human skin... you'd never wear human skin no matter how friggin hot you look, would you? Yikes. So I made a "box of shame" and threw all my leather stuff in it: jackets, gloves, books, everything. Gawd I miss my Harley boots. But nah, I'd never wear leather again, under any circumstances.
I still have leather things (belt, watch stap, couple of pairs of shoes), had those from before or they were acquired from my family (e.g borrowed the belt from my brother when I lost mine and haven't returned it yet). Seems more wrong to just throw them out, terrible waste of a cow. Don't have any particular aversion to leather itself, but just couldn't bring myself to suppourt the industy. So I wouldn't buy any new ones though, second hand or otherwise. Just on principle, and frankly I can't be arsed with the debate it would cause with friends/family.
i don't have a problem with buying things second hand.......i don't like leather at all but i do buy wool sweaters second hand. it's not supporting cruelty...its recycling.
I dont really like wearing leather, but i dont mind wearing second hand stuff at all, infact i think most of my stuff is second hand, i dont care, its cheaper and i'm poor.
If I could find some kickass leather pants, second-hand or not, I'd buy them in a heartbeat. The animal is already dead, not using its remains would be a waste of a life...
soul rebel, some would say that the money the industry makes off of the skins helps support it when beef prices are down at the store, so some folks would hav ean issue. Personally, I will buy second or more hand leather for shoes (one pair) IF I could not get what I needed in synthetics. I do buy wool sweaters second hand. again, it's recycling as Elle said (good job, sista) I use synthetics for cold weather/ running socks.
Yeah, that's the issue. The fact is that slaughterhouses are paid for skins. For a $200 leather jacket, they're getting probably $40 of your money. I can't live with that. Knowing that even 1 penny of mine is in the hands of some slaughterman would make me furious.
its good to recycle leather, but i would personally rather cycle it to others instead of wearing it myself. If ya cycle it to them, then they don't have to buy more leather, if you keep it, others who could have bought the second hands are buyin first hands. I am leather free as of now i believe, unless there is some leather hidden somewhere in something i wear, dont think so but ya never no...peas
thought about body latex? just pour it on for teh night. Truly skin tight. And exfoliationg if you didn't shave!
the only thing i would not like about buying leather secondhand is that its still sort of advertising it in a way, maybe shoes are okay but i wouldnt go wear a leather jacket even if it was given to me secondhand! however i do still have some leather shoes that i bought before turning vegan and still wear.. i just wouldnt buy them again
i think that even buying it second hand is wrong because not only are u showing others that u support it (they dont neccesarily know where u got it) but they might look at you and think its fashionable and go out and buy some themselves....i had another point but i forgot it
I'm like Sage Pheonix. I have two leather coats, leather shoes, and leather belts that I acquired before I became "enlightened" and I still can't bring myself to get rid of them. Ideally, I would box it all up and donate it to PETA but I struggle with the fact that I'll have to replace this stuff. I simply cannot afford a new, cruelty-free wardrobe right now. Some day, though....
