Its becoming pretty obvious that Bush wants to f#ck the planet, and is now doing his best to stop other nations from formulating plans to halt the irreversible damage we imminently face from global warming. Just this last year, four hurricanes, intensified by warming surface waters, devastated parts of Florida. Altered rainfall patterns left two million people in Kenya at risk of starvation. A freak December hurricane ravaged Paris and left a quarter of a million homes in France without power. A record 10 typhoons staggered Japan. And 2004 turned out to be the fourth hottest year on record. In January, Dr. Rajendra Pachauri, chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, declared that the world has "already reached the level of dangerous concentrations of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere" and called for immediate and "very deep" cuts in emissions if humanity is to "survive." Pachauri's declaration followed findings by a commission of scientists that the world is about 10 years -- or slightly more than 1 degree C -- away from irreversible climate change. That "point of no return" will arrive, according to "Meeting the Climate Challenge," a report from a commission of British, Australian and American scientists and policy-makers, when concentrations of atmospheric carbon dioxide reach 400 parts per million (ppm). Since carbon levels are already at 379 ppm -- and rising at the rate of more than 2 parts ppm per year, that deadline will be upon us within a decade. Against that background, the Bush Administration in December reneged on a pledge it made in 2001 when President Bush withdrew the US from the Kyoto process. At the time, he said he would do nothing to obstruct the efforts of other countries to forge an agreement. But at the most recent round of climate talks in Buenos Aires, the US (with the support of Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, among others) prohibited participants in the next round of climate talks in May from formulating any action plans to slow the rate of change." http://www.commondreams.org/views05/0217-31.htm
im confused . can you explain to me how bush is preventing the world from doing something about global warming? i didnt see anything in the post about it...
Here it is: "Against that background, the Bush Administration in December reneged on a pledge it made in 2001 when President Bush withdrew the US from the Kyoto process. At the time, he said he would do nothing to obstruct the efforts of other countries to forge an agreement. But at the most recent round of climate talks in Buenos Aires, the US (with the support of Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, among others) prohibited participants in the next round of climate talks in May from formulating any action plans to slow the rate of change."
The Kyoto Treaty is fundamentally flawed... it allows nations that emit less than their quota of greenhouse gasses will be able to sell emissions credits to polluting nations. While this idea could work if properly enforced, theres nobody overseeing the transfer of emmisions credits. This was the first year it has snowed in the Pecos valley since 1904. While there is evidence that the earth is heating up, its very difficult to determine how much of this is due to human industrial actions. The Earth goes through warming and cooling cycles all the time.... its possible that this is just a natural trend of the earth. While the reduction of greenhouse gasses is ideal, I'm not sure that the Kyoto protocol is the right way to go about it. 'Save the planet' is idealsitic but don't let your passion let you take your eyes off the real issues, http://www.cato.org/pub_display.php?pub_id=2789
In fact, in the 50's many climatoligists were suggesting that human actions were causing a cooling trend... Theres nothing wrong with science changing, but we don't have all the data in yet..
today is a day to celebrate! 140 countries have ratified the kyoto protocol!!! they've now gotta start reducing greenhouse emissions. this may be the dawn of a great day my friends. however, the largest poluting country in the entire world still has refused to ratify (i'm talking about us, teh US of course). well for that i would like to thank George W. Bush, the worst president for our environment ever. i am currently a member of a group called Energy Action, who is giving free dvd's of "Oil on Ice" for screenings on campuses and in homes and various places. ima send you guys a link so you can all try to help our struggle for the environment out! http://www.energyaction.net/ please go and help us save our planet! Peace and Love --pW--
Idealistic? If that means I am a person who gets up off their arse and actually does something - thank you! Of course, we could just ponder over this and that, for another 5 years, and then have someone come up with another protocol, and then wait another five years before that is ratified.... But I'd rather act now...
Nathan and Moe - yes, it is worth celebrating...its moving in the right direction. But you know what makes me mad? I am from Australia, and now, all of a sudden, our Prime Minister has said that WE are not going to sign it...(the little runt)...he's so busy climbing up Bush's backside he's turning us into a fucking colony of the United States!
Being overly idealistic could mean you could be blinded by people who's motives are much less environmental and much more political. And maybe 10 years is worth the wait if it'll bring an agreement that is more functional.
I'd rather love my way forward, but point taken BraveSirRuben... And the way we're going humankind will bump itself off anyway without any help from me.
heres george carlin on environmentalism... 'Besides environmentalists don't give a shit about the planet, they don't care about the planet. Not in the abstract they don't. You know what they're interested in? A clean place to live. They're own habitat. They're worried some day in the future they may be personally inconvenienced." "Besides, there is nothing wrong with the planet. Nothing wrong with the planet. The planet is fine. The people are fucked. '
Oh yeah, expert = "In late January, Rajendra Pachauri, chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, declared that the world has "already reached the level of dangerous concentrations of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere" and called for immediate and "very deep" cuts in emissions if humanity is to survive. Pachauri's declaration came alongside new findings unveiled on Jan. 24 by a commission of scientists from the U.S., the U.K., and Australia, which declared that the world is about 10 years -- or about 2 degrees Fahrenheit -- away from irreversible climate change. The scientists calculated that the "point of no return" will arrive when concentrations of atmospheric carbon dioxide reach 400 parts per million (ppm). For most of the 20th century, these carbon concentrations increased by about 1 ppm per year. In recent decades, that rate rose to 1.5. Today it's more than 2 ppm per year. Grand total: 379 ppm, and counting. It's a level of atmospheric carbon this planet has not experienced for 420,000 years."
