Yes, nude is a must in saunas IMO. But in my experience, saunas aren't nearly so popular in the US as they seem to be in Europe. Oftentimes - perhaps most commonly - they are attached to locker rooms in health clubs/gyms and are same sex, 18-plus only. Back when I was in my mid-20s, there was one particular gym with a pool that I frequented for lap swimming. When I was done in the pool, I would strip down in the locker room and generally spend about an hour naked. I'd take a shower, spend about 30-plus minutes in the sauna and then take another shower. It was great but it seemed to me that there was a bit of latent homosexuality that took place. This applied to me as well as my fellow nudists in the locker room/sauna. There were a few times guys subtly let me know they were interested ... always low key because no one wanted to get booted from the gym. Never took anyone up on it, but didn't mind being noticed. Harmless fun.
I fell in love with the sauna in Germany. After I met my wife, I started bringing her along with me. We went to as many different saunas as we could. It's just a great, relaxing, healing experience. I've been to nudist resorts and camp grounds in Europe and in the U.S., but I've never had the feeling of tribe, community and purity in any of those places that I had in the saunas. I think the fact that people don't go there just to be nude with the nudists, but to physically and spiritually repair makes a huge difference. Die Sauna ist eine heilige Statte. Even if it does have beer. And really, I think most holy places could use a little beer.
I found most saunas I went to being a place for physical cleansing and repair in the frist place... the "wellness" trend has made them popular to visit for building up immune system strength in winter, for instance. The spiritual type of sauna is not quite based in Europe, but in native North America - the sweat lodge. I've been to both, enjoying nudity, cleansing, wellness and spirituality... oh, and as for holy places, I would call for mead! Well, I am a little spoiled by spending quality time in a large wooden hot tub on a medieval market/renaissance fair type of festival together with other nude merry people, enjoying mead and grapes while soaking... I love saunas, my friend has one but it would be pretty gay to go in it naked with him. Mabey i would try it if had my own sauna but i don't think its a "must". I feel just fine going in it with shorts on.
I spent a while in Finland, where everyone saunas regularly. (Every single house has one!) We had a sauna at the youth house workcamp I stayed at, and we stayed in bathing suits. This was because we were 16-19 year olds from all over the world, so being naked together would have been a little weird for the Turkish girls. They did say that you are supposed to always go naked, though. It was a wonderful experience though, being in a 250 F (120 C) room with 8 other people from all over the world, while the two Finnish guys poured nonstop water on the rocks to make so much steam you could barely breathe! I actually passed out one night from it being so hot. Woops!
You're absolutely right. In my old gym, a 24 Hour Fitness, there was a "nude" sauna built into each locker room. There was also a more public sauna right next to the pool. It was awesome to hit the public sauna (with shorts on) for half an hour and then walk out and jump right in the pool. Total shock to the system. As for the "nude" saunas in the locker rooms; nobody was ever naked in there. I wore just a towel, but didn't take it off because nobody else was naked. For some unknown reason, we Americans seem to shun nudity. The public sauna was more fun anyway because we could meet girls in there
All the saunas in my area are single sex and bathing suit mandatory. You can't even wear just a towel!
How sad! In the saunas i know you would get kicked off if you go in a bathing suit. I really wonder why there is such an uptightness over there. I think the special charme of a sauna is that just all are naked and this way kind of equal. No one cares if your opposite is a judge, a tycoon, a truck driver or a cleaner.
I agree that in a sauna there is a sort of equality, and much of our differences are taken away. When I have met people whom I first knew from visiting a sauna in other places (on the bus, in town) somehow they do seem different and some of the inequalities come back.
sauna's a lot of times i think are with swimsuits and steam rooms with towel or nude, i prefer nude in steamroom, sauna's dry heat is bothersome to me.
The only thing I have on in a sauna is a towel, but if it's only me and people I know in my room, I take it off.
i'd go nude in the saunas all of the time, i have one in my apt. complex. i'd just keep a towel handy in case anyone pops in. i can't recall if there was a lock or not?
In Canada, there are 3 types of Saunas 1) Public Coed, commonly at pools or health clubs. They require bathing suit. 2) Inside change room saunas that are single sex. They are considered to be part of the lockeroom and anything goes. 3) Private saunas at peoples homes-depends on the owners for the dress code...
