I had considered it fairly average microbrew before. But I'm really digging on this Honey Porter tonight.

    Ole!

imo sam adams is no longer fit to be a microbrew.

there is no shame in success, though. it still produces some craft beer.

i find their flagship brew "boston lager" to be rather uneventful and, as you put it, average. but i still think its decently made and quite drinkable, especially as a session beer. often i get it because its the best an establishment i'm in may offer.

i do like it, but sam adams offers some much better beers. i personally enjoy their black lager pretty well, and also the honey porter and boston ale. i thought the brown ale was pretty decent, as well.

my all time favorite sam adams beer i've ever tried though was the hallertau imperial pilsner.

you could make the claim that an imperial/double pilsner is essentially just malt liquor, but the main difference is the quality of the beer and ingredients...the ABVs are similar, they both try to attain a clear, golden color with varying degrees of intensity....but this is in every way FAR superior to your average "malt liquor" and is a very, very nice beer indeed.

I've never had the imperial pilsner but am intrigued.

And yeah, their black lager and negro modelo are my go to gas stop beer. In fact I drink both of them more then anything else.

i have not had harcore. i've seen it, but not tried it. i like cider ok, but its not my favorite. i have to be in the mood....

of course, i've only had average stuff like hornsby's and woodchuck and strongbow and such...i dont know much about the world of cider, though i understand there are some excellent ones out there.

the cider i'm familiar with is tasty on occasion in my opinion, but nothing to have more than one or two of....good replacement for soda, though, if you dont mind getting a little alcohol, too (about that of a beer)

i'd like to try a good cider sometime. is hardcore better than those listed? i think i know where to find it, but haven't bothered trying it. if its unique in any way copmared to other common hard ciders i'd like to try it....

as for negra modelo, it is a very nice beer and i enjoy it quite a bit, especially considering it is mexican in origin....there are lots of good things from mexico, but the beer that makes it north of the border is pretty lousy in general. corona, tecate...you get the picture...

but it is definitely not bad at all, in fact i like negra modelo quite well. its usually what i get to accompany dinner at a mexican restaraunt. but it's made by modelo, the same folks that own modelo especial (pretty lousy), corona (also lousy), pacifico (lousy again), and corona light (worst of all)

not by boston beer company, which makes sam adams...

they're not affiliated at all. while negra modelo is great, its got far closer ties to corona than sam adams....

if i'm poor, pabst or strohs is my macro of choice for sure. fuck bud, miller, and coors.

both pbr and strohs are better tasting, and in the lower end of the price range.

but if i'm REALLY broke...fuck it, schlitz red bull xl malt liquor!

I don't drink much if I'm really broke unless I'm in the mood to be drunk, in which case I can go with OE or Steel Reserve for all I care. Anything that's not Maddog.

I'd prefer Miller over Bud, Coors, or Pabst. Strohs isn't as bad. I don't trust that rice beer at all though It's all going to be bland. I definatly like Tecate as my cheap beer though. A 32 ounce is like $2.19 and it's way better then any of the aforementioned.

Sam Adams makes some pretty good beers. Nothing outstanding, but pretty decent for their size.

Sam Adams makes some decent beer. its what i order from tap at most places in boston, unless i go to a known beer bar where they have lots of offerings. but at the bar i frequent a lot when home, i get Sam if i get beer.

the imperial pilsner is awesome though.

i'm a Harpoon kinda guy though. especially Double Bag..mmmmm. i love it as a session beer.
