Hello, OK, I know, this is RT. But I have the feeling the most sane and reasonable people come together here, so I will ask this question here: Have you had a sabbatical or do you plan on having one? Regards Gyro
Hello, oh, I'm quite comfortable with the voices. They are entertaining during the long and lonely late shifts. Regards Gyro
I have only heard of this in an academic setting. I have never had a sabbatical but now that I am retired I supposed one could say I am on a permanent one.
Good afternoon, Yes, I am on a sabbatical right now. Regards, odon Sabbatical or a sabbatical (from Latin sabbaticus, from Greek sabbatikos, from Hebrew shabbat, i.e., Sabbath, literally a "ceasing") is a rest from work, or a hiatus, often lasting from two months to a year. The concept of sabbatical has a source in shmita, described several places in the Bible (Leviticus 25, for example, where there is a commandment to desist from working the fields in the seventh year). In the strict sense, therefore, a sabbatical lasts a year. The main Bible passage for sabbatical concepts is Genesis 2:2-3, in which God rested (literally, "ceased" from his labour) after creating the universe, and it is applied to people (Jew and Gentile, slave and free) and even to beasts of burden in one of the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:8-11, reaffirmed in Deuteronomy 5:12-15).
Isn't a sabbatical when you take a leave from work to pursue something else? Like I met someone the other day that was taking a sabbatical because he had received a grant to write a book. I would really like to take a sabbatical.
Academic sabbaticals used to be common back when well rounded individuals were considered to be beneficial to an enlightened society. One half or one year sabbaticals could be taken for formal education or for enrichment through travel. All sabbaticals had to be approved and traveling sabbaticals had to be documented and shown to be beneficial, such as a Spanish teacher traveling to Spain. Normally the educator would receive half pay while on sabbatical. Sabbaticals are very rare today with all the cost cutting going on in education. Here in PA state funding to pubic education was recently cut by almost 1 billion dollars.
Hello, uhm? Oh, I'm sorry. I should have said 'sane and reasonable people and Tyrsonswood'. Better ? Yepp, in an academic context it is used for a semester without the student plague . I use it in a broader sense. I think about doing something completely different for a year or so. Regards Gyro
Hello, May I ask if it is a sabbatical in the sense that you are doing something different or are you waiting for the next opportunity? Is there a chance that you are copying me ? Yepp, that is what I am talking about. Except for the grant . Doesn't that become boring after a few years? Regards Gyro
Yes, but only for a month long or so. I don't know if that counts. I purposely left a job for a break from working, but it was inevitable that I find another soon, since I was paying a mortgage.
Hello, damn, I know . That is something I can imagine doing, too. I work hard, but it is mostly mental work. I haven't done real physical work for ages. Going into the woods, chopping a dead tree into pieces and building a shelter doesn't count . Regards Gyro
Hello, let's pretend you are and now mingle with RT's other sane inmates . Indeed, that can be a problem. I've stashed a few bucks in my pillow case . That should be enough to pay the rent, insurance and stuff for a few months. Regards Gyro
