Did you use rubberbands to start your dreads? How long did you keep them in?

I've had mine in going on 4 weeks now and I'm hesitant to remove them. I figure it's not going to do anything but continue to help knot up the roots.

On KnottyBoy website it mentions being able to take them out after three weeks.

    What is everyone elses experiences?

    Thanks,
    G

i didn't use any rubber bands at all.i don't think they're really necessary. i'd say don't leave them in too long, because when you have to cut them out you don't want to end up damaging your pretty dreads.

Yeah, I actually know that one of the rubberbands won't be coming back out. It's been devoured by hair.
I was originally planning on this up-coming Monday, but maybe I'll give it a go on Saturday.

Well, if I did it over, I wouldn't use rubberbands again. They were good to keep them together, but a year and about 4 months later, I have rubberbands devoured into my dreadies, and I wish they weren't there. As months went on, I kept on finding rubberbands at the ends of my dreads and was able to pull them out, but some of them I just forgot and now they're all gooey...and ewww...in there forever...

So yeah, take from that what you will...haha...:)

the only thing you should put into your dreads is LOVE! ...with the exception of some tea tree oil and rosmary for your scalp ;)

Bands dont help the dreads knott, they prevent it. your hair needs to move to knott together

I actually removed 90% of the bands over the past 2 days and I bought a flea comb 3 days ago and I should have been carrying it around with me a few weeks ago.

Is it recommended to continue back combing each day and week until you can't anymore? I've already broke a few of these metal prongs.

I stopped back combing after a while and just let them do their own thing. Back combing is just trying to rush the process... and its MEANT to be a long process. Seriously just chioll with the back combing and let them knott their self, and you CANT expect to have rounded tips already, mine ive had for over a year and the tips ent rounded.

Rounded tips.. I don't expect that. I actually like when the tips aren't so perfectly shaped and a bit whispy.

I'll take your advice though. I've destoryed the comb I was carrying with me at work and I only have a few sections that I haven't gotten to start knotting up near the root. They are more phat and stubborn than the others.

I haven't washed in 2 going on 3 weeks and I'm not wanting to anytime soon. I realize my dreads are VERY young, but I'm too worried about losing any of this "matty-ness" to water and shampoo.

if you get itchy try rasta locks and twists medicated spray, you can get it at any beauty supply store for $4 it kicks the itchies ass and will not untagle or grease up your hair!! I do recomend washing the spray out a few days after you put it in just incase any nasties get stuck in your hair............

I also use rasta twists and locks aloe/mango/lime gel sometimes, smells great and keeps locks tame if you need to go out some place nice or something, But i also wash this out too.... don't want any gunky build up slipping into my dreaddies

but i am glad to hear you got those bands out......... they are a menace too your hair =) the only thing in mine now is a hair wrap and a bead made by a really cool lady at the flea market..........

    WASH YOUR HAIR!!!!!

Greasy hair won't dread...the oils will make the knots slip...which means no dreading action. Use shampoo with all natural ingrediants...especially tea tree and grapefruit seed (keeps bugs away!). I started using a homemade bar soap and had really good results.

So, greasy hair = smell AND no dreads.

    WASH YOUR HAIR!!!!

I've had my dreadies for over nine months...at first I washed A LOT...now I don't have to wash as much. MAYBE once a week or once every other week. My hair just doesn't get oily anymore. It's strange...

yeah my hair doesnt get oily for about a week now...if you only wash it weekly, your scalp will produce oils at a slower rate...

I used rubberbands for the first few months because I had twists first, and they would have just fallen apart

Rubberbands dont help at all. I took mine out after about three months and had only one round tip. My hair has done some much better since taken them out. And you need to wash your hair about once a week. Clean hair dreads faster than dirty!

I haven't washed my hair for 2 - 3 weeks, I don't remember the last time and still no grease what-so-ever.
I'm going to give it another month probably, but if you get REALLY close and sniff my hair it smells of smoke which isn't good. Someone I met on myspace said she used to smoke her hair with incense so I might try something like that out.

i guess it all depends on the persons hair, as i used bands but they really helped. most of my tips are rounded, but i do play with them a lot. i also found that they really help with stubborn roots in knotting up. i never had to remove the bands they just fell out by themselves after about 2-4 months and then by then they had done their job. i think they really helped, now i don't need them as ive had mine about 2 years now, but i would suggest using them if you have a stubborn dready or do want to assist in the rounding of the tips.

I wrapped my roots in a piece a cloth then put the rubberband around that. My dreadies are 1 week old today but I was already having an issue with the rubberband getting devoured. I play with my dreads regularly and so far it seems the more I play with them the better they look. i'm alternating between 2 patterns of cloth so I can make sure I hit each dread. Without rubberbands (I went about 2 days without them after backcombing) my roots were getting unwieldy, so I had to figure out a way to keep the rubberband without having them become a part of the dread.

    my 2 cents...

I have a couple bands at the roots... just kind of loose, they get swallowed up and I don't mind 'em that much.

Wash your hair, dude. You're gonna schtank. Clean hair dreads nicer, anyway.

if you gonna use rubbers on your roots and don't want them in there forever consider using ouchless hair ties instead. I made that swtich right before I washed my dreads (which resulted in half of them coming out ><), and really liked them. if you want to tame your tips and decorate your dread at the same time, find some nifty cloth and cut it into strips, wrap the strips around your tips and slap a rubber over that. I did this for about 4 days and when I took them off to roll the dread the tips were all smushed together. After palm rolling the dread I rolled the ends in the palm of my hand the they would seperate and knot up real good.

I took my dreads out, but will put them back in soon. the whole story is in ideas and suggestions thread..
