"Blue Highways" by William Least Heat Moon is quite good. "Hell of a place to Lose a Cow: An American Hitchhiking Odyssey" by Tim Brooks is fun though rather light. Then there is always "Travels with Charley" by John Steinbeck. Of the three, the best is probably "Blue Highways"

A cliche perhaps but On the road (Kerouac) the Dharma bums (again Kerouac) is a similar theme but more focused on Buddhism. I'm re reading it at the moment.

Bill Bryson's travel books are good too.

Good luck with the trip, have fun.
