goddamnit, i'm poor and hopelessly hooked on smoking for the moment. nasty, terrible habit i know, but so hard to break. i often have to pay for my smokes largely in change because i don't have much money, and it seems like cigarettes have been getting more and more expensive lately. my favorites are pall malls (yeah, i know most people hate them, but i'd take a pall mall above a camel or marlboro almost any day of the week) and when i started smoking them they cost $2.45 almost anywhere you bought them. they'd be maybe 2.55 some places......but i just got on the pall malls a few months ago, and already they're up to 3.05 being almost the cheapest you can find them unless they're on sale someplace. i actually had to lower myself to buying a pack of basics today - always inferior to my trusty pall malls, but they cost my a whopping 2.74 besides. i know this isn't much, but needing a new pack every one to three days really adds up. these companies are getting rich on our fucking addictions. how many millions of packs of cigarettes are bought every day......and the just HAVE to raise the price by 60 cents a pack just to make that much more money on our failing health, just because they know as much as we hate it we'll still pay up. it almost makes me sick enough to actually have the will power to quit. i wish it did, actually.

The tobacco companies profits from domestic sales of cigarettes is not increasing. The rising cost of tobacco is because of the government. The "sin tax" on tobacco keeps going up, supposedly to ofset the cost of smokers illnesses to medicare and medicaid.

They never take into account the savings a smoker provides to social security by dying early!

This is pure politics. It is hard to raise taxes for everyone and get elected, but if you can make up the difference by charging it to select individuals, you can get away with it.

    It is bullshit!

well, thats true to an extent, but lately pall malls have gotten more expensive -while other brands HAVENT seemed to be as much more expensive- around here. for example, basics are the same price as i've always known them to be.

unfortunately pall mall is owned by one of the eviler tobacco companies, brown and williamson. ever seen the movie "the insider?"

though i am aware of "sin tax," and imo, yeah, it IS bullshit.

8-10 bucks a pack most places in Canada.

true, and you have to account for the fact that most of the time the canadian dollar is worth less than one us dollar, as well. player's lights are my favorite cigarette actually, but the only place in my town where i know to get them charges like 6.50 for a pack of king size, and i like the shorter ones better anyway. good smoking though.

I've been smoking Camels for about 5 years now, and the price has risen maybe $0.3-5 cents since I switched back in '00. I noticed that Dorals, which were sold for maybe $1.15-2.00 a pack when I first started now cost $40.00 for a carton at the local gas station...and they're off-brand!

I'd recommend finding the website for your distributor and signing up for coupons; with the coupons I get from Camel, I'm paying $14 for a carton and get a free pack of Exotics every month or so. ;)

i have a rolling machine from back before i rolled pretty decent blunts and joints and such. it would be easy and cheap to order some bulk rolling tobacco, papers and filters. i'd save a bunch on taxes and whatnot. i may actually look into that. i would go back to hand rolled, i just can't stand the unfiltered thing.

Its retarded. But the price being so high is just motivation to quit smoking.

i actually went out and bought cheap plastic zig-zag injector today, along with a carton's worth of light cigarette tubes. together it was about eight bucks. a pouch of bugler rolling tobacco at the gas station then cost me an additional whopping 1.45...this may be a really great idea once i find a tobacco i really dig.

i've seen p-funks on buy one get sales before, but those are one of the most misleading advertising campaigns cigarette companies go on. "normal" prices for a pack of smokes is a lot higher than what you usually pay, they're just almost perpetually "on sale"......and they go off sale for buy one get one deals, so in some cases (such as with parliaments, less so with camels) you pay almost as much as you would for two packs anyway...

most places charge $5 around here.

I can remember paying a $1.26 for a pack of Marlboros at a Walmart back in High School.

Yep, I blow a crazy amount of dough on cigarettes each year. I'm going to try and quit this summer though - start working towards it on April 1st actually.
