Heyyy Unlike the synthetic dreadlocks I have in my signature piccie, I'd like to finally get some natural dreads after wanting them for the past 7 or 8 years. So, how do I go about it, and how do I take care for them? Thankels muchly Emilie xoxox
I went to this site when I was doing my locks and they gave me alot of help, I eventually bought a can of wax to use too. Some people also pull it off without the wax, just by not ever combing your hair but a little help cant hurt. http://www.knottyboy.com/index.htm
Aye, a natural beeswax will get the dreads forming a bit quicker. It's not a bad idea to spend a week or two not washing your hair, get some dirt and grease in there! You'll need help and good night's worth of help too. I'd suggest having some booze or pot at hand also, it can be a pretty painful experience. I've seen a grown man screaming and biting down on a wooden spoon to help him through it! The key though is definitely in the backcoming, lots and lots of backcoming.
apparently you need to fiddle and twist them lots to keep them looking good and not all matting into one big lump
NOOOO AAAAAGHHHH!! BIG MISSTAKES SUJJESTED!! no wax!! none! not even beeswax!! stay well away! Basically wax that isnt natural has products in there that are designed to stay in your hair and therefore WILL stay in your dreads, and beeswaxs also after many years of use gloops up inside your wonderfull dreadies. Eventually these products WILL go off. And what are you left with? mouldy dreadlocks! Also Dreadlocks are in effect knotted hair, wax does not help it knott. it just clumps it together making it LOOK like its knotted, to truely lock the dreads need to be able to move, its the natural movement of the hair which locks it up. all wax does is bring all the fluffy bits in which are supposed to be locking and stick them to the side of the dread. Also the whole "dont wash your hair" theory is also not recomended... well not by me. FIrstly if u dont wash your hair it goes greassy, this is a natural conditioner basically. What do you put in your hair to get knotts out? Conditioner. This is because it makes your hair slippy. Your natural greases do the same therefore my advice is to wash your hair with some form of natural SOAP bar, i went to lush and got a Juniper soap bar. This has no conditioning value and its totally natural. I only use this once a week, and other showers i just wash with water. My advice is to go to these forums and talk to these people. http://www.knottylocks.tk These are people who actually have dreadlocks. some had had many attempts at getting them and found the best route. The other places such as "knottyboy" or "dreadheadhq" are all trying to sell you products, so everything they say will be based upon the product they are selling. Good luck my dear I hope they go wonderfully for you *huggles* Llama love Fleassy xox ....PS. ..... sorry if i come across a bit boff like.. but i wanted dreads since i was 9, had 2 failed attempts and decided to research a bit into them....2years later i finally worked it out and im still learning hehe they are great fun.
Eee, thankels for all the help I spent approximately 2 hours last night attempting to dread my hair....the result being 2 very very poor quality dreads which are already falling apart. And twas painful I plan to spend the next 10 hours or so working on them though, hopefully it'll be worth it... Yey Fleassy, I was hoping you'd reply xxxx
I'm not unfortunately, owing to lack of fundage But thankies anyways *hugs* I shall meet you one day soonly though
*claps fleassy* listen to what she says! i did my dreads almost a year ago and started using this so called dread wax which contained petroleom-a major no go for dreads, this stunted their progress rather a bit. i also used a bit of natural beeswax melted down which some essential oils in them, now this won't go off in your hair if you only use a tiny amout but basically using nothing is better. my dreads are now very tight and wonderful. once you start wear an old leg of tights on your hair at night- looks daft yes- but helps so much. don't wash them for about 2 weeks initially then gradually increase it to every 3 days or thereabout. my hair now naturally cleanses itself so don't get greassy so now i can leave it without washing for as long as i feel like it but i do still wash it with a non residue soap. also swimming in salt water helps too. play with them a lot at the roots, yeah it hurts and takes time but dreads are NOT EASY contratry to popular belief. even now my dreads take time but they are a story of my year that i have had them, they mean different things to different people, and you can tell the ones that only want them asthetically(sp) as they can't handle the reality of the dread.... anyways go for it girl, if you need any other advice let me know. and if you want to see my dreads progress then ive got a pic up in the uk member pic forum....good luck! namaste x x x
ok im growin my hair and dreading it its only short now (cos i only just started growing it) how long does it need to be before i can start my dreads ??
Blimey. Sorry for my advice, never intended to give you mouldy hair! You could be in for a good few months worth of daily backcoming if that's all you plan to do though. Suppose it depends on how badly you want dreads and how long you think you might wear them. I've not seen it disputed that 3-4 inches of length is when you can start dreading. Usually gives better (or quicker) results too.
Yeah the wax just makes it easier for dust and shit to stick to them. I waxed them once and never did it again because it looked stupid, I hadnt picked the right colour :& but they were fine right up until I cut them off.
