I dunno... I started into music when I was about 13 or 14 with old school metal guys like AC/DC and Black Sabbath but got out of it when I discovered punk. I had been listening to 90% that since then and then the other night I went to a metal show to see Soil and Static-X and haven't listened to much punk since then lol. I think it may have something to do with not knowing any punk bands around here so I been going to mostly death metal (uhgggg I know) with my friends... But I got this strange reoccuring taste for stuff like Mudvayne now... Strange stuff there
If there was ever a good time to get back into metal, now is it. Because of pretty much one band (IMO). Opeth. Best death metal band I've ever heard. They combine beauty with destruction, in a completely intellegent way. If you aren't into the death metal vocals ie:growling, listen to Opeth. The vocals will bug you, until you realize how completely necessary they are in the band. Their guitarists are talented, their drummer is amazing, the bassist just kicks ass, and Mikael Akerfeldlt, while not having the most technically amazing voice, is probably my favorite singer. Opeth just kicks ass in my opinion, check them out. Some other good metal bands, that aren't punk (I'm not a big fan of punk) include: Dream Theater Meshuggah Borknagar Dimmu Borgir Death Into Eternity Mastodon Nevermore Morbid Angel Soilwork Symphony X As I lay Dying Extol Living Sacrifice Zao (check out their new stuff, really awesome) Between the buried and me Sikth This is a WIIIIIDE variety of metal, but please, do it for my sake, check out atleast Opeth. Come on man, there are a lot of punk fans out there already, don't go back to it dude.
Guitar_god, I couldn't agree with you more. Opeth is fucking amazing. Actually, I just bought their newly-released DVD today...and I can't wait to watch it. I loved how you phrased "They combine beauty with destruction in a completely intelligent way"...it's sooo true. I love Mikael's voice...and the fact that he does vocals as well as plays guitars and solos. His growling is just as beautiful as the clean melodic parts, IMO. The Martin's are great (the bassist is crazy to watch live...you can never see his face 'cause of his hair!), and Peter's awesome too.. Opeth is truly an amazing death metal band. Check 'em out!
ArtistofPeace, you kick ass. You know, Opeth came to Vancouver, which isn't too far from where I live, and apparently Martin Lopez has these anxiety attacks now, so he was off for a few dates. The drummer from Death filled in. Wow, that show, although not as good as a show with all of the members, would have been something to experience for sure.
That would've been great to see. Yeah, a show with all the members is always awesome, but sometimes the shows that stand out like that kick so much ass. I've yet to see Opeth live, but I'm dying to. And Dream Theater, I've seen them live (the best experience ever). I wanted to see them on the 20th...they're playing with Yes in Atlantic City. But I can't fucking see them 'cause of school...so not fair. DT's only playing for about an hour 'cause they're opening for Yes, and the show would cost about $65. But I wish I could go... So sad. But yeah, Guitar_god...you kick ass. You have great taste in music...
No, you kick ass, Dream theater is amazing. I bow to anyone who has seen Opeth live. Here, check this out, I found this guy on the Opeth forum who has a page devoted to pictures of him with Opeth. Mikael is so awesome. http://www.angelfire.com/mt/led/meopethpics.html
Thanks for the link, man! You're so cool...haha Ya know what's also really cool about Opeth? They're really nice guys, and they're really passionate about their music. A lot of people will judge them right off the bat 'cause they're a death metal band...but they're so cool, and they're true artists. I love reading interviews with them, especially with Mikael, 'cause they seem like really chill guys, as well as awesome musicians...
Hahaha...for the sake of not being killed, I'll say I haven't... But no, I haven't (unfortunately). But I know people who have and they've said that they're so fucking nice...like really down-to-earth and mellow. Plus, if you read interviews with them, you can just tell they're awesome guys...haha.
DT and Opeth are my favorites. I also like Tool, APC, Evergrey, Symphony X, OSI, Porcupine Tree, LTE, Onesidezero, Dredg, Stabbing Westward, Divinity Destroyed, Soilwork, VAST, Mars Volta...um...yeah, I'm sure there's a lot more, but my brain doesn't want to work anymore...lol.....
Children of bodom is the most kickass metal band. Dream theater Blind Guardian Overkill is wicked too
I really like Liquid Tension Experiment, and I looove porcupine tree. Tool was my fav band untill I heard Opeth, but Mikael is singing on the next porc Tree album! It's going to be sooo good, judging by the stuff on blackwater Park Steven Wilson sang. Like on Bleak, oh man, the next Cd of Opeth and Porcupine Tree are going to make me lock my bedroom door, and sit there for weeks listening to them.
Hey ...LTE is amazing. It's cool that you even knew what I was referring to...haha. Tool rocks also. Lately my listening has been so DT and Opeth oriented though...haha. Shit, really? Mikael's singing on the next PT album? That's gonna be awesome..... Dude, you HAVE to pick up the Opeth DVD! Do it now! lol. I haven't finished watching it yet...but omg. Oh, and Steven Wilson is on it too...they show him doing some guitar and keyboards and backup vocals. Plus he produced Damnation and wrote the lyrics for Death Whispered a Lullaby...but you probably already knew that...lol. Seriously, pick up the DVD if you love Opeth (and I know you do). I was watching it today and was like...in a trance...lol. Guitar_god...you're awesome
hahaha, of course I've seen the DVD. It's amazing. The thing they did on the recording process was amazing, and the concert was just orgasmic. I read an interview where Mikael said that they played Demon of the Fall too, but they didn't it on the DVD, because of their record label. I've seen the DVD probably 6 times now actually. But yeah, Opeth is amazing.
Hahaha...sorry. I guess I'm the one who's behind then...lol. That's funny, 'cause I was gonna describe the concert as "orgasmic" too, but I figured you might think I'm an ass...haha. But seriously...that's the perfect word... Stupid record label! Demon of the Fall wouldn't been awesome. Oh well...record labels can really screw ya over. Anyway...it's cool to meet a fellow Opeth fan...lol...
Hahaha, I love how we have this thread about rebirth into metal, but all we talkabout for like 2pages is Opeth. I love it. I started up an Opeth thread a while ago, but no one posted on it! Ok, well, this'll be our Opeth thread. What's your fav Opeth album? Right now mine has to be My Arms Your Hearse, but Still life is amazing, and so is Deliverance, Morningrise, Orchid, Damnation, and Blackwater park, lol, so....
That's cool that LTE was mentioned! I got into them from the Tony Levin/King Crimson connection, but I guess it never dawned on me (duh!) about all the DT fans liking them, too. I also like PT, BG, Spock's Beard, CofB (what I've heard), DT, some Symphony X and Iced Earth, and some of the other bands listed in this thread. Some listed I'll have to check out more of. I like more of the 'experimental metal', if there is such a genre. so many great musicians that the mainstream radio listeners will never hear nor would they probably appreciate if they did.........
