I have an interesting question. Sex is about love (except prostitution of course), and violence is about hate. Then why are some movies only rated PG13 for violence but immeadiatly go for R if there's and sex or swearing in it? Swear words are just words, they're choosing hate over love and inforcing it on children. Okay, maybe I'm overrecting here. But what is your opinion?

    My opinion is this:

    (1) You have an awesome avatar. =)

    (2) The reason that swear words and sex are rated "R" (or at least "M") is because these ratings are defined largely by the Christian views of what is acceptable and what is not. In Christianity, swear words (especially when they use a divinity's name in vain, ooh, that really gets to 'em) are bad, and shouldn't be shown to young children. It is, in essence, jading them. Likewise, sex is something that is supposed to be coveted, and only a product of love shared between two people. Love (and sex), then, is not supposed to be public, it is supposed to be private, including in theatres. So, at the very least, we stick a big "R" on it and let that be that, since legally (due to the little bit of separation of church and state that we have) prohibition of those movies is not possible.

Dumb reasons if you ask me. But whatever.

Edit: P.S. Welcome to the Hip Forums!

i think we've got some pretty stupid ideas about what is and isn't acceptable for our children to see. sure, they can watch people shooting each other up and shit, but BEWARE NUDITY! oh no! two people indulging in "normal" rather boring sex!! GASP! that's pornographic. it's irritating.

It's the twisted logic of the 'Christian' kind (no offense to sensible Christians -they're out there too, just not in charge of the movie rating system :p), although quite a few non-Christians copy it as well, probably mainly because they haven't given it any thought. I've always found it really strange too... A family I knew allowed their son to watch lots of violence but as soon as even a single person shed clothes (not even a sexual scene, just nudity) they'd flip the channel. And for fully-clothed kissing scenes that went beyond a quick peck on the cheek, too...
