i would consider them rock with a little punk. i know they arent like full out punks like sex pistols or anything, but they seem to be classified as punk. what does everyone else think?

I would consider them real punk-rock.
They totally were some important roots
    of real punk.
    Classic punk, if you will.

They play with the same 4 basic chords of punk rock, but that's about it. They don't have what the true first punk band had (Sex Pistols).. and we all know what that was.

Proto punk basically. But hell, even Brian Eno's been considered proto-punk...

The ramones are straight up punk rock. end of story. they didnt have spiky hair but any punk will know it doesnt matter what you look like as long as you got the spirit. sure theyve got that old rock n roll sound too but soo do alot of punk bands (the cramps, the clash exc..) in my mind and a good portion of all punks minds i believe the ramones are not only a punk band but the best punk band of all times.

The Ramones were punk rock...head and shoulders above all the punk bands, in my opinion...but then again, I'm not really a punk rock fanatic.

But, if you simply wanna call them a rock band, you'd get no argument with me.

I like The Ramones, they were a fun band!

The Ramones are my all time favorite band, and I think they can be classified as both. Thier idea was to bring rock and roll from the dead, since all the other music was psychedelic or filled with guitar solos. Guitar solos weren't in original old rock and roll from the fifties and early sixties, so Johnny Ramone refused to do them. They wasnted to bring back what was dying.

    Hmmm...

"Beat on the brat" "Blitzkrieg Bop" "Cretin Hop" Teenage Lobotomy"...

    Now...
Are these "in your face, 'Fuck You'" sounding titles? Lyrics?

    I happen to think so.

You could almost wonder if true sounds of liberty were punk, or hell even the subhumans, if you're gonna question The ramones.

They all wrote [some] songs that seemed to not be straight up aggression kill die, sardonic satirical sarcasm...
Than again, that shows the versatility of the movement.
So long as it's not play for pay, fortune is merely a side affect of bands that happen to kick that much ass in the act, not the purpose. And the epitomized
always give back...against the mainstream. :D
    Fuck Establishment.

The Ramones are a punk band. But with the way music's changed over the years, each generation hears the band differently. Nowadays they sound more like a pop/rock band since punk's changed a lot since they stopped.

I consider them one of the best examples of what punk rock means

not necessarily my favorite, but right down the center of punk rock

They were real punk. They helped start it, helped create the fashion and the attitude. And, most importantly; they helped create the quick, fast, straight-to-the-point punk song.
