Qustion about money from the government

Some people tell me if I'm not working, I can just apply and I could get welfare money. Can you guys tell me why would they give money to a person like me? Don't you have to be injured, have kids or some hardship?? Anyone get welfare or knows of anyone who gets it have any idea?? Any specific criterias you have to be in?

if you have had a job, and got laid off, then you are entitled to getting unemployment, as long as you paid a certain amount every month when you worked.
