Always the bridesmaid, never the bride, we can't forget about our lovely cousins across the sea in good old Northern Ireland. I for one celebrate the fact that they are putting down their guns and their pipe bombs and embracing British imperial domination at last after all these years. At least we have one colony left! But where will our squaddies go to get their practice in?

I've never been but I've heard it's a lovely place. Perhaps we can answer that age old question on everyone's lips, just what do Northern Irish people smell like?

Apparently it's one of the places to go, according to the Rough Guide, that and Beirut.

Tis a pretty country, shame it's full of northeners. :)

I am not going to brave Northern Ireland because it appears to be static. Advice to tourists, if you must go to Northern Ireland, best to wear a hard hat and a bullet proof vest aswell as knee cap protectors in case you get shot in the knee caps.

It is ashame as I think that Ireland is a beautiful country as a whole but it is spoilt by seemingly endless conflicts between protestants and catholics. Still, here we are in the 21st century and it is asthough nothing has changed or moved on. There is more chance of a Middle East peace process than any peace process in Northern Ireland.

no, i am not anti Irish, I am anti violence. I think it is shame on Northern Irelanders who still cannot make peace, twenty years on.

Yes I prefer my countries to be subject to noticeable drift, or at least gentle rotation...

I think we have come close to a definitive answer on this now, although I'd still be interested in more theories

Just because some factions are laying down their arms ,doesnt mean to say that they are embracing British Imperialism.
    Anyway,ALL imperialism is wrong.
Theres plenty of places for squaddies to go and shoot bullets anyway.

ps,a friend of mine has been to Northern Ireland many times and says its stunning.
    North or South,its all Ireland.:)

    This isnt really on,is it?
Maybe the soldiers wouldnt be wasting bullets if they took a few pot shots at the ruling classes.

oh........and maybe the geezers who dont know anything about politics should educate themselves before shovelling a load.
I am a British Ulsterman and if you knew facts there were plenty of 'squaddies' got thier asses capped for want of a better word.
    Nobody wins in war.

    n.b. sssshhhhhhh!
