In my area hash is not very common at all, but last night at a Phil Lesh and Friends concert I was able to trade a joint for a bit of hash. I've never smoked hash before, and I noticed later on after I got to look at the hash better that it didn't smell like bud as I recognize it and when I broke it up and put it into my pipe it didn't burn on the first hit like normal weed, so I stopped smoking it since I didn't know what was up with it. Are these normal characteristics of hash? Or did I get ripped off? here is a picture of the hash along side of some amazing maui waui that I bought that night.
Well it will not smell like weed as the plant material is gone and as far as burning goes - it will flame, blow it out enjoy the ember
try packing a 1/3 bowl then put a "pancake" of hash on it (heat it up with a flame, pinch some off and flatten it with your fingers), then cover that with a little more weed. when done this way, i like to have the 2nd hit off the bowl. hash takes a little longer to burn, but when it does, it BURNS. putting the weed on top prevents the smoke from escaping while allowing it to cherry. the 1st hit is mostly heating up the hash and not getting too much off it. by the time it gets going, you wont even have to use a lighter - it´ll keep the whole bowl rolling.

Our friend's hash didn't look right, and he/she didn't enjoy it either. From what I see in your picture, SD, you enjoyed your experience.
