I was thinking about this and I'd appreciate your comments

Why is it that that people always find the need to explain their actions/themselves?
I know that it is considered common courtesy, but whats the point? other people dont need to know.

A good example of this is: BRB gone to...

It is to keep misunderstandings from happening...and to answer any questions before they are even asked.

I want my friends to know I'm getting a drink, taking a piss, and etc... It makes them feel special when I share this information.

People can get soar with you if you don't answer their messages. "Where the hell have you been!?" kind of stuff. Just as erzebet said, it makes things easier.

sometimes people freak out when you don't respond for a while. i'm the absolute worst at that stuff, i wander off with my kids and housework and stuff all the time and forget to tell people. it's why i like these boards. conversations go on for days. it's easier on my short attention span and no one gets pissed if you don't respond.

also, when i'm on the phone with someone, and i have to divertmy attention from them for a moment, i'll let them know that i'm currently unable to give them the whole of my concentration. that way they don't get mad if they say something important and i go "uh-huh? oh...what?"

NOT everyone does. an explanation of your example might be someone who REALLY WANTED TO STAY IN THE CONVERSATION AND KEEP IT GOING but really HAD to go pee before they peed the chair or turn off the stove before the boiled dry crispy critter on the stove resaulted in the house burning down.

Yes I understand all of that perfectly. Yet still, I just dont see it absolutely neccisary to tell people where your going all the time. It isnt even just in the VW (virtual world), people allways need to explain themselves in the real world too. Of course some explaination is needed, but what about in situations where if you think about it, it isnt really someones buisness what your doing. You still feel the need to do it.

I don't know, something to talk about I suppose....

Nice sig pic KC, wish there was as much snow here as there is there in your pic. There should be, the reason why I am telling you this is because I like snow and I like snow because it's nice and none other then because I feel like telling you.

    ^^^^^^ see :D

    precisely, it's a preventative measure

especially in today's world of instant communication and near-constant availability, people always ask what you're doing or what you did. It's preventative to just tell them in advance rather than have the same conversation with a few dozen different people. Same reason behind many people's blogging (ie mine), keeps people in the know if they choose to look, but means I don't have to say the same thing to multiple people

Then you should come up here to Saskatchewan. We had a blizzard yesterday, -36 with the windchill, winds up to 90km, about 25cm of new snow

and today it got to -47C with the windchill
(-40 is the same in both F and C, if that helps with conversions any)
