I've had Rosie for about a month now. We got her from a shelter and she's about six months old. She wasn't fully house trained when we got her but it only took her a few days to learn to do her business only outside. She also "tells" us when she needs to go by going to sit in front of the front door. She's a very clever little girl. Anyway, for the past week or so, it seems like she needs to pee a lot more because she's had some accidents in her room at night and also a few during the day if we're not at home. It's not like she doesn't get out enough because she spends most of the day outside and she's hardly ever home by herself. So I don't really see any reason for these accidents... Any ideas? Or is it just normal puppy behaviour?
If she's only doing it when left alone, perhaps she might be nervous in case she's abandoned again...seeing how she came from a shelter. All our dogs were a few months old when we got them and although they learnt quickly they all made mistakes until they gained confidence and felt 'safe'. We have a puppy now..Harry...just 11 weeks old and still a proper baby, so we're all on a learning curve with pretty much everything but he's smart and so far today everything has been done outside. Nights we put down a puppy pad and he usually manages to pee on that, lol, probably just luck really. Jen was reading up on stuff and it's reckoned to take a year until pups are fully house trained. I'm sure Rosie will be fine, as I say, all our dogs were. Good luck!
If a dog smells it's pee from a previous occasion, it gives them a green light to pee there in the future. try cleaning her favorite targets very well, and if that doesn't work a light spritzing of citronella is helpful. It sounds like she's just getting impatient (dogs almost never excrete where they sleep), so you have to let her out more often.
Make sure she doesn't have a physical reason for the accidents. I think a vet visit is in the offing. Bladder stones or kidney problems may be to blame.
a question myself (if anyone is listening). My sister-in-law brings her puppy over and he poops and/or pees in either my room, my daughter's room, or my hallway and nowhere else. My wife and I work opposite schedules, so I am not there to witness the event, but it seems that this puppy and I and my daughter have become arch nemises(es) and I need to find out how to combat this. perhaps my question has been answered and my sisinlaw is not letting him out enough, but I am desperate for a solution elsewise I am liable to inflict bad karma on this dog, or to accedetnly teach my daughter to do so in my stead...
Well we've got Rosie sorted out now. It definitely wasn't because we weren't letting her out often enough, she's outside for most of the day and when she's in she's very good at telling us when she needs to go. I think the problem was that she just got used to peeing in a certain place and also because we have carpet in that room and obviously carpet is a bit more difficult to clean. We got one of those carpet cleaner hoover thingies to clean it properly and also sprinkled some vanilla essence on the carpet as I've heard that works well removing the pee smell and indeed, it worked perfectly. No more accidents. Manfrombham, maybe that's the problem you're having as well? Try cleaning the spots the pup has peed in really well and get some vanilla essence to cover the smell. Hope it works for you! Not sure about the pooping though, that sounds like the pup really just needs to go out more...
