http://www.guardian.co.uk/society/2008/nov/07/mayfair-property-art-squat "It is one of London's most exclusive addresses. Michelin-starred restaurants are just a block away, the American embassy is around the corner and Hyde Park is at the end of the road. To share the same postcode ought to cost millions. But the new residents of 18 Upper Grosvenor Street, a raggle-taggle of teenagers and artists called the Da! collective, haven't paid a penny for their £6.25m, six-storey townhouse in Mayfair. The black anarchist flag flapping from the first-floor balcony gives a clue what they are up to: ever since finding a window open on the first floor on October 10, the group have been squatting in the once opulent property, and only plan to leave when they are evicted. This might take some time given that after almost a month, whoever holds the deeds - a company called Deltaland Resources Ltd, according to the Land Registry - doesn't appear to have noticed that their multimillion-pound building has been taken over."
Don't we all. Maybe we should all meet up and go for a visit, solidarity and all that. When they need it, obviously. Visiting crowds would not be welcome during peacetime
Right, I've heard enough, I've decided to find a building in Northwich to squat in. I was under the impression that squatters rights had been squashed...... .....Last year Harry Hallowes, then 70, drew international attention after he became legal owner of a piece of Hampstead Heath, north London, where he had lived rough for more than 20 years. He was handed the deeds, worth £2m, after developers threatened to evict him.......amazing!
Maybe we should call in a terrorist alert on Buckingham Palace then when everyone leaves go in and claim squatters rights
I think its great, it is good for the building too if they weren't in there it would probly just disintergarate. There are far too many empty buildings in towns and cities. I have a friend who is part of a group who do this in Bristol and they make do with their space and other space... its great! Put to use the things that are not being put to use.
Ended up here the other day, quite a mad place but in a fair old state of disrepair, not the luxury building the media has made it out to be. Lots of holes in celings and floors, lots of bits that need plastering etc though obviously the building is quite special and has a lot of potential. Loads of interesting installations going on all over the shop, I didn't explore the whole building but it is pretty huge, all sorts of crazy artworks and a big curved staircase just inside. Most of the residents I met were sound too, they've got to go to court tomorrow so best of luck to them!
When they get evicted they will prolly go home back to mommy and daddy and live in the parents basement
