I don't see how feminists can argue that pornography is degrading to men or to women. Certain people make certain choices, and if one of those choices is showing themselves having sex in a role-play situation (few porn movies have an emphasis on realism. If the viewer can't grasp this, I don't think they'd function too well anyways), that's their perogative. It's not objectifying shit; it's just something that reasonates with primal instinct. Flame away. Just don't bring my age into this.
I don't agree with some peoples' assertion that pornography is -always- degrading to women, but exactly how much porn have you looked at? I have a feeling that, like a lot of people, you aren't looking much deeper than the surface, and the surface is most undoubtedly that somebody wants to get off and uses a video to do so. Beneath the surface you see that the person who wrote the pornography (most porn is scripted, but I'm sure you knew that) is pushing certain ideals on the viewer which, like it or not, are degrading to women and designed to keep them "in their place." People who claim that pornography "isn't objectifying shit" aren't aware of their own sexist attitudes. That's not an insult to you, because really, few people are aware of it. I have seen a great deal of porn in my day (straight, gay, lesbian, and bisexual... I've seen it all). When it comes to standard porn of all sexual orientation, it is extremely obvious that almost all of it was made and scripted by men for men in order to perpetuate certain stereotypes. In cases where it features women, they are enacting a submissive sexual role because that is what the men who direct and watch the porn want them to be. Whether or not a woman chose to be in porn is irrelevant as to whether or not it is degrading to women, because it is likely in most cases she is not acting the way she would in a real sexual situation, she is acting in a way which is pleasing to the men watching the porn, which is often a degrading position. Some titles are worse than others. Have you ever seen or heard of a porn in which the women were crying through the whole thing? Acting or not acting, this is a disturbing thing for a person to get off on, and you are insane if you think that is not degrading. Even mainstream porn often looks like a very watered down rape fantasy. Intentional realism isn't the issue here. Even complete fiction is portraying what the author thinks is an ideal. For the record, I am not anti-pornography. But what's going on is not just fun and games, it -is- objectification.
My favorite type of porn is where women dominate men. Anyways, its not so much the content of the porn that degrades the women in my opinion, or most porn anyway. What is degrading to our society and women is that these girls sell themselves to get money. In some places women have to resort to prostitution to exist. This used to be much more common. Porn is degrading to women because women do it for money. Not all porn is degrading, but some of it both because of its content and because of the circumstances make it very degrading to women.
The adult film industry markets certains types of films for specific target audiences. It is a multi-billion dollar internation big business. They will make any type of movie that people will buy (within certain legal limits). Making any generalizations about them based on viewing a few or few hundred is pointless because there are hundreds of thousands availible adult films. There are several major studios that are owned by women. It is also one of the few industries where women performers are paid better then the men. It is mainly a marketing objective to what audience the movie was made for and they try to make them for every type.
Societies with more porn have more sexual assault crime. I can't see how anyone can say that abuse of womyn can NOT be degrading. Unless they LOVE their fucking porn so much, they are trying to rationalize a less than functional behavior. JMO.
I think most that consider porn to be degrading do so because they feel it encourages other's to only value women as objects for sexual pleasure. I don't think that they look at it as the actors specifically are being degraded (we all know that many of those women make good money), but more of the message that sends our society, specifically adolsecents just learning about relationships and sex, about women.
Nearly all womyn who are in the sex trade were sexually abused as children. I don't think they have had the right parenting (if you can call it that) or bringing up to be able to really know what is healthy for them. Sera, you brought up adolescence. Porn does more to cause problems with sexual maturing. NO ONE, man or womyn acts like the people in those movies. No one should be expected to "live up" to or act like the people in those movies. How many people, do you think, have been forced into sex acts that they didn't want to do, because someone they are with "saw it in a porno?" Too many. I know that. I know more womyn who DO NOT want to have anal sex, yet think "guys expect it" and that comes from only one of two things, Porn, or these dudes wanting someone OTHER THAN a womyn with them, and are trying to simulate that. How much lack of imagination can people have, that they need porn? I guess I don't get it.
I think most 16 yo males think its ok, but what kind of experience do they have with REAL women? they have dated girls, maybe, and they are completely dependent on media imagery in word and image. I strongly suggest you read Alice Walker's essay Coming Apart in Take back the Night (1979)
Absolutely. I was raped as a teenager by a teenage boy i was dating who wanted to do anal just like in his collection of porn. He was even mentioned his porn before raping me, and had tried a few times before that to get me to do anal with him like in his favorite porn. He was actually convinced that sex with women was like, and should be like, what he saw in pornos - and convinced that all women want sex when the man wants it too, apparently. Makes me wonder how differently things would have turned out if not for the porn he watched.
Yeah, but I haven't heard about very many "tenticle" molestations. Look, I've seen a shitload of porn, and I know it's allllll fake. I don't watch porn and think, "Oh, this is what sex must really be like!" I watch porn and think "Oh, great! Penatration, etc." Wash, rinse, repeat. See porn, whack willy, spooge. Simple as that. I don't watch it to see my fantasies acted out, just to see coitus.
Well, I was going to ask if you would want to be in a porno, but I can't ask you that, because if I did the men in the blue uniforms would take me away. So I just brought your age into this. Whaddya gonna do, punk?
We're not saying that all people who watch porn think that is what sex is really like. We know you got a good head on your shoulders, FreakyJoe
^^Most porn stars I've watched biographys about have said they were sexually abused/exploited as children....if that's not a reliable source, I don't know what is.... Cooking shows are just stereotypical....but, there are male cooking shows. So, not degrading....just too stereotypical. Of course you're going to think porn is awesome and nondegredational....you are 16....most 20 year old males think it's great. I guess when you grow up and finally become a REAL man (Not to say some 20 years olds aren't men....but ya know....) you'll finally appreciate a woman for what she is....and not what she can do on film. I'm not saying I don't watch porn....because then I'd be lying....but I do it just to have something to watch....and usually don't make it through 20 minutes without turning it off....it's kinda gross to see.
A lot of porn is degrading, but not all of it. "Porn" also has a very, very loose definition. Some people see just straight nudidty as porn, others it has to be quite hard core before it gets the tag. And remember guys, even though most porn is for men not all of it is by any means.
