Ok so I can understand African American..the term...but cakasian (sp ?) I mean come on waht is that all about?
what ever happened to jamaicans and such?...there not african and yet because they have dark skin they are miss-termed african american
Excellent point... I've worked with Jamaican folks & Haitian folks, and they never said, "yes, I'm an African American"... It'd be like me running around saying, "I'm an Italian Irish Little Bit Russian With A Couple Generations Diluted French American". It just sounds awkward.
That is an issue that has a lot of controversy around it, the way it is meant is to mean anyone in America from African ancestry, but people who are actually from Africa or know their family members who are directly from Africa are really the African-Americans, just like with other races. Personally I don't really know any white people who say "I'm caucasion", they say "I'm white", and most people in my family since we actually know of our non-African ancestors and not our African ones, just say we are 'black' and really non of the labels are befitting when you really think about it but they are just labels and who really gives a shit? I sure don't.
http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=caucasian&r=67 Caucasian: 1) Anthropology. Of or being a major human racial classification traditionally distinguished by physical characteristics such as very light to brown skin pigmentation and straight to wavy or curly hair, and including peoples indigenous to Europe, northern Africa, western Asia, and India. No longer in scientific use.
that doesnt include australia, i wonder what that makes me. im not politically correct, lifes too short, people shouldnt take themselves so seriously. the little things that people have outbursts about shit me.
At one time everyone in austrailia was in europe. Austrailia was used kinda like a prison for people that didn't pay taxes.
That shits you...I've never heard that expression before and I'm so glad you said it...heh heh I'll be using it all week..heh
thats what i mean shatter...where did cauc come from? some people come from africa so you call them african..I didn't come from cauc....I cane from Germany, Ireland, And italy
Caucasian ... 1807, from Caucasus Mountains, between the Black and Caspian seas; applied to the "white" race 1795 (in Ger.) by Ger. anthropologist Johann Blumenbach, because their supposed ancestral homeland lay there; since abandoned as a historical/anthropological term. Lit. meaning "resident or native of the Caucasus" is from 1843. The mountain range name is from Gk. kaukhasis, from Scythian kroy-khasis, lit. "(the mountain) ice-shining."
Whoopi Goldberg, a celebrated black comedian was quoted as saying "I'm not an African-American. I'm an American Black. I've never been to Africa so I don't identify myself as such." Does that help?
umm, Africa is a continent, not a country. It's not in any way like calling yourself "italian irish german blah blah blah-american." If you wanna be politically correct, you would call yourself a european american. not that I care
You know what bugs me? That hispanics get to call all white people "anglos". The Anglos were only one of many barbarian tribes that make up the ancestory of a relatively small portion of europeans. Most europeans aren't decended from the Anglos It would be the same if you called all african-americans Zulus or all hispanics toltecs.
I wasn't trying to be politicaly correct I was more wondering where the cauc came from. And someone answered it thank you
