i will get alot of shit. but i'm not a big pigpen fan. in the beginning his organ was always way too loud in the mix, drowning out everyone. And his surfer style was a little too "old school psychedelic"....but, i do ENJOY alot of it....many great jams came out in that time period. i just prefer the years after pigpen. i enjoy the the most (but this changes alot i must admit) is the 70's era with keith and donna jean godchaux.....i think all the members at this time were kicking alot of ass......but i love the 60's, i love the 70's, the 80's, and the 90's.....i was listening to the 6.25.95 show and it is fucking brilliant! i don't know, i'm just ranting...
I don't really like 80s or 90s show, early 80s some of it I like, but 90s I don't like at all really... I like 67-77 mostly.
pigpen is one of my favs, great in 72 and 66, my fav pig years, tastebud, the same thing, hurts me too, all those tunes are amazing.
Don't forget the "Jump on my wagon an' ride pretty mamma Jump on my wagon and ride" Pigpen and James Brown are the originators of rap music
You suck. That's because you're listening to a board recording of a small place like the Fillmore. In the room, whatever wasn't loud enough, like the kick drum and keyboard, got turned up.What was louder in the PA is louder on tape.Later on they used a 2nd board to make tapes. Dood.Get a picture taken of your ass and study it.Because you don't know ir from your elbow. Oh bite me. You ENJOY it,but you're not a fan. Thanks for sharing. And watch out for surfers.
Why would you post this in a thread called "Pigpen is the shit!"? So you are saying Pig isn't the shit? Bingo! You don't know! Bottom line is who cares if you don't prefer the Pigpen years. I hate to break it to ya but Pigpen is/was/will always be the shit
yeah, i pigpen is great. Keith Godchaux was pretty cool as well though. Pigpen was cool himself, but I think overall, the jamming was better with Keith...
sorry to disagree with everyone but i have always thought pigpen was the weak link in the band for a lot of years, i dont dislike him and i really enjoy a lot of his stuff, but he primarily played r&b and blues and "surfer phycedelic" like some one called it before which was awesome when that was what the dead was doing but as rock skully once said "pigpen can't get off this planet and bobby weir wont come back to it" reffering to the fact that pigpen refused to try any hallucinagens and bobby took so many no one could follow him. jerry was forced to fall back into the rythm on a lot of jams to keep pigpen and bobby togtherand as a result couldnt play all he wanted to. but yes you guys are right there are a lot of great pigpen moments.
and micro man dont diss someone for posting their opinion if its in contradiction with the original poster's. the point of a forum is good productive conversation. and for the record i do agree with the statement that "pigpen is the shit" overall.
Okie Dokie, I'll try my darnest to "get lives". But if you start bad-mouthin' Pig again I'm gonna send Owsley to get you.
LMFAO!!! Man I love phish, but a good amount of the fans are just beggars/pseudo heads. Dude, WTF, how can anyone hate on pig for playing r and b? You fuckin ever listen to in the midnight hour, some old school fuckin alligators dude goes from r and b to fuckin world style percussion to psychedelic jamming... hard to handles from 71 fillmore east shows! COME ON! This is what jambands are about dude making you get groovy and dance around, anyone hating on pig is probably a touch-of-greyer. Like someone else said, you hate on pig, and we're going to have to send some family down to your city's water supply lol. Everybody be loving pig then.
