I plan on joining it too as soon as I can. I think it is an awesome thing to do and a good way to help out. Maybe I'll see you then.

I dunno, there are a lot of negatives about the peace corps now. For starters they send you to some pretty remote and sketchy places where your safety is generally in jeopardy. Not to say they don't try to keep you safe as much as possible, but still.

Aside from that if they pull your project for safety reasons they don't make an effort to replace you in a new project, they just dump you on the street essentially.

AmeriCorps seems to be a much better organization. Especially since they handle people who need help here, which is a good thing.

Yeah they are great. I think in a year or so I'm going to spend some time with AmeriCorps. They have lots of different programs all across the country, and you get to pick which ones you're interested in... which is a huge plus. I think I'll spend some time where I'm at geographically right now, then take a trip to the gulf coast for a year to help down there.

The other cool thing is that americorps provide you with health insurance and generally housing as well, in addition to paying you a modest living allowance and you get either a cash reward when you've completed your term of service or they pay off a big chunk of student loans.

For one of the programs Im looking at it's either like $1300 in cash or $4500 towards loans. Which is really cool.

A guy who went to my university is taking the year off to volunteer with AmeriCorps... So I looked at the website to see what programmes they have, and it looks really cool; I'm thinking about volunteering with them sometime. I've also looked at the Peace Corps website, and I think you have to have a degree and job experience to do a lot of the volunteer work...

    ^^

I know someone who is taking a year off before college to join the peace corps
Im looking to do a program with either them or americorps either before or during college. Evergreen actually gives you money if you did something with americorps:)

Peace corps is pretty competitive, and you do have to get a degree to do it (or at least be working on a degree). But after I get my masters I really want to go to Armenia, because they really need English teachers over there (thats what I'm going to school for, anyways).

I wrote a thread about this too. I plan on going after I graduate college...I think its really hard to get in if you haven't graduated college. I hope you guy's know that...so I hope you plan on going to college. I'm not saying it's impossible but it is a lot harder to get in. If you guy's do go I hope to see you in 3.5 years.
