so america is far behind when it comes to physician assisted suicide. look if your grandmother had pancreatic cancer and had 6 months to live and was in excruciating pain every second of the day, wouldn't you want to help her end it. wouldn't you want to let your grandmother leave this world, to ease her pain. so what is the big deal with this idea, what is so wrong about letting these poor people leave this horrid existence? oh i see religions say it's a sin to commit suicide, so what? god must really want us to suffer if he is going to force granny spend 6 months in excruciating pain. so come on people what's your opinion on suicide and physician assisted? shouldn't states start to tackle this issue and put it on the ballots to be voted on by the people?

i think it should be allowed, under very strict circumstances. it gets tricky when a patient gets to the point where they are unable to communicate effectively.

Granny shouldn't be in excrutiating pain. Virtually all pain can be eliminated or that – in those rare cases where it can’t be totally eliminated – it can be reduced significantly. It completely sucks that so many people don't get adequate pain control. But giving doctors a license to kill their patients isn't the answer. The solution is to mandate better education of health care professionals, to expand access to health care, and to inform patients about their rights as consumers.

more money going to education has not solved anything. we are dummer, the public schools are a joke. and pain medication causes horrible side effects and addiction. why not just die with some dignity and pick a day and get the family together for one last picture. that's what we need to do. it's humane and it's reasonable in this day and age..

Assisted suicide isn't a private act. It involves one person facilitating the death of another. We're talking about changing public policy so that DOCTORS can directly and intentionally end or participate in ending someone's life. This has the potential to lead to a major amount of abuse, exploitation and erosion of care for people who are already vulnerable. I don't think every suicide is irrational or even tragic and people do it all the time but I'm against giving doctors the legal power to kill their patients.

    Nothing. I`m 100% behind euthanasia.

  7. This is not giving doctors "a license to kill",this is allowing people to decide that enough is enough! Yeah, sure, life is sacred, but only if it worth living. The decision to end a life of suffering, a life that is going to end anyway ,should be up to the individual and the medical staff involved in their care.Wanting to keep loved one's hanging on despite their suffering is selfish and bordering on the inhumane!

The law already permits patients or their surrogates to withhold or withdraw unwanted medical treatment even if that increases the likelihood that the patient will die. Medical ethics don't require that “everything be done” to keep a person alive. Insistence, against the patient’s wishes, that death be postponed by every means available is already contrary to law and practice.

that skirts the real issue. let's quicken the process. we need to be bold and honest here. we need options to end it, not ensure the likelihood that a person will die. this is the only honest and humane way i believe. you see in today's society there is still this uncomfortable feeling with suicide and physician assisted because people are religious and think they will go to hell and or everybody heard of dr. kavorkian and thinks the doctors will get away with murdering people or something. it's all paranoia and bad science and hearsay. the truth is if we are really free, and we live in a true free society, we have the right to life AND to death!

It isn't just the religious right who oppose assisted suicide. Disability rights activists are vehemently against it. I'm an atheist and I'm against it. And why isn't it possible that doctors could get away with murdering people? I think they already have too much power. You really don't see ANY potential for abuse at all? And like I've said, people can commit suicide if they want. Also, it's not like medically assisted suicides have never gotten messed up and gone badly. Look it up on Google.

Agreed. Or greedy family members wanting the inheritance asap.

We have palliative care for people in pain. They may not be awake anymore, but they will be comfortable until they go on their own.

look we have to get the foot through the door. we need to get started and fix the process, streamline it. sure there's going to be mistakes and errors and problems to start with but you know what we need to march on and stand up for those out there who deserve a peaceful exit. stop the fear mongering!

i was referring to the netherlands primarily where it's legal for someone who's terminally ill. america is still very religious and most people are wary of the idea and to me that's too bad because we are supposedly free and liberal here. but obviously we are fools and are slaves in denial and we think we're still free. like i said before we talk all about the "right to life, liberty pursuit of happiness BUT we forget the other end of that argument. we are such an intolerant nation here in america but we masquerade as these freedom lovers. we're a joke.

As far as this is concerned - America is similar to 99% of the rest of the world.

Isn't MJ legal in a couple of your states now?

I've read two US states have made it legal for 'physician assisted suicide' - or removing treatment under certain circumstances. Most countries I've read up on it is illegal to commit suicide. Most liberalised countries won't prosecute if it is assisted even though it is illegal. I'm really not quite sure what you are trying to say, to be honest.

so instead of treating the patients and prolonging life, they do not treat? that isn't physician assisted. i'm talking about medication to kill. not letting one die or giving them morphine iv. i'm talking about putting them out all in one fell swoop.

What would a doctors fee schedule be for assisted suicide?

I think If I were to pay someone to assist me toward death, I would tip to have them do the whole thing.
