I don't know if it's just me, or if other barefooters do this too. Whenever I play an online game, or something SIMS-like, and can customize characters' footwear, I would make mine barefoot in game, to the point where it became second nature and I wouldn't have to think about customizing my avatars to be barefoot. (coincidentally enough, that gets pointed out EVEN IN A VIRTUAL WORLD) An example that comes to mind is on the PS3's Playstation Home network, and Mabinogi. (Named an avatar "Hadashi" too. the japanese word for Barefoot, in that game.) So I was curious to see if other people did something similar, or if it was a personal preference. Just a very random post+poll.
Even though I am playing occasionally on a somewhat retro-style non-graphic online game known as a MUD, I have made my character a barefoot one, as can be seen on this character page of mine. Originally, I developed the character for a classic pen-and paper gaming round, where we played using the GURPS roleplaying system. Wiggling bare toes, ~*Ganesha*~
Cool, someone else who still plays a MUD! I do also, but I don't have a graphic of my character, and I do tend to wear a full set of armour including boots. I did make barefoot avatars when I had graphic pictures like on Facebook games, but there it's just a picture, what you wear on your avatar doesn't influence the game. On the MUD (at least the one I play), armour does a lot to protect you from the attacks, not to mention the nicer pieces that give you stat boost or hp/sp regen, and such a character wearing very little would simply take a lot more damage in combat and miss out in other ways. Since I tend to get my items from all different sources it'd make a rather interesting combo anyhow... Right now for example (playing in another window) I'm wearing a rather ugly robot helmet and a dog collar that makes me bark, LOL! > exa helmet This ugly piece of armor looks a little like a diving helmet. Constructed from a tough metal alloy, it provides excellent protection from most forms of physical damage. This is important since the robots that wear them generally work in very harsh conditions. The front of the helmet is made from fiberglass, allowing others to see the robot wearer's digital read-outs. exa collar Inlaid with circuits and wires so tiny that even the most powerful microscope could not decipher the code of its functionality, this incredibly complex-looking dog collar is the choice accessory for a distinguished pup. It is large enough to be worn by a human, although the consequences of such action would be unknown. Oh, and these exa boots Magnificently crafted, these steel boots have an icy shimmer to them. Legend has it that these boots were worn by the paladin Aylin in his battles against the Mordon. You feel a compelling urge to rub these boots for good luck. At least my main looks nice: > exa armour This armour consists of every type of element known to man. A swirling mass of fire, water, earth, air. You name it, this armour is made of it. It's light weight because of the element of air. The element of fire helps to keep you warm, and the element of water helps to keep you cool. The element of earth is used to offer great protection from physical damage. The magical energies used to create this armour are very powerful and wearers of this great item should be careful. This armour is truly a work of pure beauty. In short for those not playing: my MUD gear is for functionality and yes, I do wear footwear in the game.
I totally understand where you're getting at. I know that it has nothing to do with how people dress in real life, but still, I made it a habit to make my characters barefoot, even with all benefits. (I.E. in Mabinogi, higher stats both offensive and defensive) and still end up at a higher degree of experience in that game. This is a screenshot of my character in mabinogi. (I realize the graphics aren't that great, hence the feet look like clumps of whatever, but they're still bare...) This is a screenshot of his transformation (boosted stats and crap like that) and this was a sketch of my character, in an outfit designed by myself, drawn by a friend, and submitted it to the game's clothing design contest.
