Ice caps melting, poles shifting... the water on this planet is gonna take a MAJOR shift and a tremendous amount of land will be underwater, while some land will likely beuncovered. I think thats what the date coincides with... the date when the mayan civilization is underwater.

Could also be an asteroid or something like that...

But the date must coincide with some sort of astrological/major earth event, this isn't the "doomsdays" of the past, this is a bit more significant. The year 2000 was nothing significant, there was no reason to expect the end of the world. There was no plausible reason for every computer in the world to simply explode, and there was no reason for everyone to think that would have caused chaos.

Here we have a date predicted as the "end" by an ancient civilization that was incredibly advanced in its thought. Its of some sort of significance.
