I was a hippie in Yorkville Village in Toronto Canada. This was though the 60's. these were some of the best years of my life. We were all just a bunch of kids giong against the establishment. Picture an entire block filled with teenagers just hanging around. It was filled with cool stores and coffee houses. The street was filled with cars on the weekends coming to see theses awesome hippies. What a main attraction we were. Some of us were runaways just out to have fun with our peers. Pot was rampant everywhere and the majority of us either smoked or dealt it. LSD was a big thing also but so many kids were trips although there was always someone to look out for us. We were pretty much like a huge happy family. There were also the greasers and the bikers, but we all toleratd each other and got along. Most of us used nicknames, mine being Sam. Then we had the weekenders.....the kids who still lived at home still going to school etc. The cops patroled the vilage and knew most of us. They knew we were pretty much a bunch of good kids just having a good time. Most of us lived in rooming houses in the area. Some of us worked, some panhandled and some pushed pot. What a great life we all had in the village. We pretty much promoted peace and love. Around three hundred kids and seldom any fighting...this was too uncool. I smoked weed way before I ever drank alcohol. Drinking was for the greasers and the bikers but we saw drinking as being so uncool. Most of knew everyone in in the village or knew of them. No discrimination here at all. We had sit ins and protests but all in a positive manner. Pot was so cheap back then...$5.00 for a nickel bag whiah was probably half a quarter, and a dimebag ($10.00) which was probably a quarter of an ounce. Man how lucky were we!!! Of course as we all reached our twenties we began to face reality and get back into the real world. We coulldn't live on love and fresh air forever. What a shame, as most of us moved on we lost touch with one another. I remember kids coming from all across Canada and the States to the village and us hippies travelling around Canada and the U.S. I'm now 55 yrs years old and have the greatest memories of those years. I have a 13 yr. old daughter who loves to listen to my stories about those years. She is now getting so into the retro hippie look and wishes she had lived the good old hippie lifestyle. It warms my heart when I see her dress in the hippie fashion. I also have two other daughters but they are already much older than her and are living their own life in society. Oh to go back in that time and find some of the greatest people I knew. I sure wish I could reconnect with them now and see how life has changed them. But alas life goes on and this is probab;y just one of my pipedreams. Anyhow I send them all my love and positive energy wherever they may be. To you Peter you are still in my thoughts!!! Thanks for allowing me to come to this site and share my past with you. PEACE AND LOVE TO ALL!!!!!

No one seems to be replying to me...does that mean that all of those wonderful hippies are truly lost in the establishment or doesn't anyone care anymore?

Thanks for your response Pansy, so nice to hear from others who lived the same lifestyle although yours sounds as if was a lot more dramatic than mine. I'll have to check your posts. My life back then brought me to where I am now. I just find that we live in a me,me,me, society instead of caring more for others. I just get nostalgic sometmes for the positive, loving and peaceful days of that time in my life. Peace and positive energy are being sent your way!! Thanks again

It's so ironic that Yorkville is now the most high-priced shopping district in Toronto.
