We have reached the point where the entire supply of the Earth's oil is 50% depleated. And nobody can miss the fact that gas prices have risen very high. People need to learn to conserve oil and recycle waste oil properly. There are so many people who drive those gas guzzeling SUVs or pickup trucks when they don't need them. For example a person who lives alone driving an SUV or someone driving a pickup truck just to look cool rather than haul loads. I think the worst of them all are the people who dump their waste oil out in the woods or in a stream. Another problem are the people who rely on cars to take them just up the street when they could walk there. I have alot of experience with engines so heres a tip to save you some $$: when you get gas and you have the choices REGULAR, PLUS, and PREMIUM you only need PLUS or PREMIUM if your vehicle's manufacteor requires you to use it to prevent knocking or if your vehicle's engine is knocking when regular is used. Knocking will result in serious engine damage. Most cars can use REGULAR. You may hear PLUS or PREMIUM burns cleaner or it makes your car go faster and run better but this is all not true. Tests were done to confirm this. Making the right choice can save you alot of money. Here are my tips for oil conservation: 1. Buy a small car with good gas mileage rather than a huge gas guzzeler. Hondas and Volkswagens are known to be fuel efficient. 2. Keep up with getting your car serviced especially if it has a carburator. A well maintained car gets better gas milage. 3. Recycle waste oil. Dumping it out where it doesnt belong is not only a waste but also bad for the enviroment. 4. Use 4 stroke cycle engines rather than a 2 stroke cycle engine (the engines in which you must mix oil in with the fuel) wherever possible. However, it is impossible to use a 4 stroke in a chainsaw or leafblower because 4 stroke engines must be operated upright. 5. Never remove the muffeler from a 2 stroke cycle engine as unburned gas can escape without it. A 2 stroke also tends to run terribly without a muffeler. 6. Propane water heaters are more cleaner and efficient than diesel and gasoline water heaters. 7. Unless you are physically disabled, there is no reason to drive your car when you need to travel short distances. Walk or ride a bike.
I agree with your tips, but will say gas is still very cheap. Oil would have to be at around 90 dollars a gallon to match what it was during the oil shocks of the 70's (after adjustment for inflation). That means prices have to increace by 50% which is a bit of a way off. But not too far off. I am in agreement that Peak Oil is a reality, and is here or will be soon, as in, this year or the next.
ride bikes! zero gas used and you get to tone your ass. also i love my scooter; 100+ miles to a gallon of gas.
We are told we haveabout 40 or so years of cheap oil left, problem is they told us the same thing 30 years ago.
Well, hydrogen cars have been developed, they just can't release them because oil companies would buy them out. The sooner the oil runs out the better.
I don't have a car. I go by bike, by foot, and public transportation ( usually trains) and I am very proud that I don't need a car. If I have to transport something big, I go and rent one. That is cheaper then owning one and not using it, and I don't get tempted to use it for unnessary ways.
any wise mechanic will recommend to use premium gas at least every 3rd or 4th fill-up, particularly on old vehicles where the internals are getting dirty and aged.
And what happens in the the good ole U S of A when they propose a bill that would force car companys to make new vehicles be much more effecient in gas consumption. Its shot down!
I am really good with engines, and trust me there is no need for premium unless the engine is knocking.
No need to conserve. Use it all up. Of course, the national symbol for gas conservation, the city bus. My city has buses parked idling with the AC on all day for homeless hippys, so they don't die in the heat. Hypocrisy never seems to fail in the land of the lost minds.
Anymore I feel so bad whenever I drive anywhere- not only is it expensive, but I'm noticing the smog more and more around where I live. I even switched cars so I could drive a more fuel- efficient one (my first car was an '87 honda, which I drove for two years until my parents bought a jeep, which I started driving. I've since switched back to the honda because I felt so bad driving a big SUV with crappy fuel economy). So now I'm suffering in 100- degree weather in a car with nonfunctional AC (not that I'd use it even if it did work though)- and the thing is, I'd probably be cooler walking than driving. I just wish there was an alternative to driving around here.
Diesel hit $3.09 a gallon here yesterday, regular gas is still a nifty $2.73 a gallon. I'm converting my vehicle when it hits $5 a gallon.
If you buy a vehicle with a diesel engine you can use bio-diesel, and there is no engine conversion needed. Volswagen Golfs and Jettas are two GREAT little cars available with diesel engines. If you're doing this your best bet is to make yourself a propper filter and use deepfryer oil, works great because the only thing more abundent then gas stations are fast food joints and they always have a barrel or two of the crap laying around waiting for disposal. If this idea doesn't float your boat then just use regular diesel, there is a problem with the particulate pollution it emits but it burns cleaner and more efficient then gas. The cleanest burning, most efficient combustion engine however is a propane engine. Conversion kits usually cost between 2-5 grand.
I want a hydrogen pulsed engine, but really know so little about it that I need to do a whole lotta research still. I saw a car that ran on ethanol the other day...I'm wondering how environmentally friendly that can be. Bio-diesel's a popular one in these parts.
Hmm I just remembered the veggie oil cars. Since they don't use the oil we are trying to conserve I would classify that as no oil usage for the poll.
well.. i totaly agree with the whole... conserve oil and stuff... but you wanan kno what pisses me off??!?!?!!?!?... kay so i live in Alberta, Canada.. one of the largest oil suppliers to the world i think? or north america.. haha i dono.. but in my city..i can drive out of town a lil bit and watch oil being pumped out of the ground...so you would think.. hey it should be cheap in alberta... but nope its not haha We Sell our oil to USA then they modify it and SELL it back to us.. Gawd it pisses me off... haha i don't drive much.. walking seems to be better
very much, octane has nothing at all to do with performance unless you have a high compression engine, if you don't think you do, you don't using high octane fuel in a car not designed for it can actually be detrimental if timing is messed up enough that is rare though as far as I know
in europe prices are much higher for fuel, many in the US don't realize how cheap is it in fact for you, people in the us usuallly statisticallly own more cars per person than any other place in the world, here in scadinavia, sweden, most people use plublic transportation, it is much much more devellopped than in the us, so I hope that your country can modernise this aspect....
