I've just realized this. There is nothing we can do about the future of our lives and our planet. It's over... You have to realize what's really going on. This isn't about Bush and Kerry; this isn't just about Iraq or 9/11; this is about one big thing: oil. We're just about out. We have reached Peak Oil: A time in history in which we consume more oil than we discover. This cannot, and will not, last. We will run out of oil before you know it. Within all of our lifetimes, we will have no more oil or natural gas, and I mean NONE. What does that mean? Many things: No cars, little electricty, a useless military, worldwide famine, etc. Consider these facts: In 100 years mankind has used up one-half of all the oil in the world. Currently the world uses between four and six barrels of oil for every barrel that it finds. Natural gas use is exploding while the rate of new gas discoveries is plunging. According to BP-Amoco, world oil production per capita peaked in 1979. The OPEC nations of the Middle East will peak last, many of them between now and 2010. They will soon be supplying up to 40% of the world's oil. There are only about one trillion barrels of accessible conventional oil remaining on the planet. Presently we use, as a planet, about 82 million barrels per day. At this rate, which will surely rise, we will run out of oil in thirty-five years. The U.S. is home to 5 percent of the world's population, yet we use twenty-five percent of the world's oil. Don't you think that our government probably wants as much oil as possible before it runs out, seeing as it is so important to our lifestyle? Without oil, our economy will be destroyed. Our lives will be entirely different from what they are now. We won't be driving cars, we'll be walking and riding horses. We won't be reading by lightbulb, we'll be reading by candle light. And this will happen WITHIN OUR LIFETIMES. This is going to happen while you are still young. This isn't a problem for our children or their children, it's a problem for us. So, that brings me to my original statement. There is NOTHING we can do. In order to keep our resources in check and attempt to control the emminent downfall of modern civilization, there will be drastic "human population control measures" taken. What does that mean? It means the extermination of four billion people on Earth. It means that once the oil is gone, human life will NEVER be the same on Earth again. There is NOTHING we can do... NOTHING.
There are still other energy sources, power will just be scarcer... And hopefully someone will have the sense to invest heavily hydrogen power or some other alternate power, so that it may eventually be quite efficient and abundant...
yep. but don't let chuck hear that - he'll cuss you out and call you names because yer a quitter, and a pussy. and somesuch nonsense.
there's always suicide. better yet, mass cult suicide!! we'll call it the...... PWNHSC .............. the people with no hope suicide cult yeaaa
There is something we can do. We need to start researching clean technology FAST. Once we have clean technology, there will be much, much less worry once we run out of oil. Hydrogen power is very promising, and the next step is already being looked into: fusion. Another good energy source would be atom splitting. With all the energy in a penny, you could power New York City for two years. That would be quite an achievement.
Such a massive collapse of infrastructure would present huge oppourtunities for the creation of an empire... Who wants to join my forces?
An immediate changeover to alternative fuel sources is a joke. Consider this: Do you want to layoff tens of millions of people in the oil, shipping, and auto industries, in car dealerships, garages, and gas stations while all the factories and ancillary services are retooled? That process might take decades. How would those people who would be laid off live? What would happen to all of the companies and banks in which these people owed payments but now could not make? Who would make up the tax revenues that these people could no longer pay? Who would finance all the capital investment needed to convert us over to alternative vehicles? In spite of recent promotions about hydrogen, the federal government is still fighting tooth and nail to keep electric vehicles from becoming a commercially viable reality. The myth of hydrogen salvation is a fantasy of the naive and a cruel hoax of the policy makers and business people who know better.
I'm not saying to immediately change, more like a back up plan... Have the possibility to switch over the major functions to alternative sources... I also never said that I think this would be done, simply that it would be a good idea to do so.... Anyway, bring on the failure of modern civilization! I wanna conquer shit and build an empire!!
I'll join you as your humble ally... together we will bring Alexander, Attila, Genghis and Napoleon to shame
I love the way you think. Hey now, Derek, if the end of the world were coming, wouldn't they tell us? **ponders this for a moment** No, they wouldn't. Nevermind...
Life will not end if we run out of oil. It will merely force us to look for viable alternatives. The doom scenario may make you feel prepared but really, it's not productive. How's it working for you young Samuel, apart from scaring the shit out of you? I might add that this is the perfect segway (segue? SP?) to remind people that I have launched a new forum, for doing instead of giving up. http://sage1970.proboards39.com
No, you're right. The end of oil will not bring the end of man. However, the end of oil will bring the end of what is called "Petroleum Man." No longer will men blissfully waste away earth's fossil fuels... of course, there won't be any left. Once the oil runs out, we'll quickly begin buring coal until it runs out, destroying the air while we're at it. If alternate fuel sources were seriously pioneered starting right now, we would be lucky to begin using them in a widespread fashion by the time the oil and natural gas runs out. Of course, there is no serious pioneering of alternate fuel sources happening right now. Think about it: If we could just create an alternate fuel source and not have to worry about the end of the age of oil, then why is the U.S. starting an imperialistic crusade to control the rest of the world's oil. Why do you think that the U.S. is in Iraq? Surely we're not there to "bring peace to the Iraqi people." They have roughly 11% of the world's oil, and we want it.
This had to happen someday. It's called karma--humanity has been wasteful and stupid for the last 100 years and now it has come back to bite us in the ass. No one should really be surprised; it serves us right. In the end, I think the expiration of oil will be a positive thing: it will force everyone in the first world to do a complete re-evaluation of values, hopefully paying legitamate attention to the third world in the process. Think about it this way: Since the first world has had oil, we've been living more and more convenience-driven lives, and thus we've become more and more unequal with the third world. We had the opportunity to use oil and our wealth to improve the third world, but we failed. Now, since nature does not like things out of balance, she is forcing the world to become more equalized--if we run out of oil, can't drive our cars or use electricity, we gradually will begin to see what life has been like for 2/3 of the world this whole time. If we don't lift up the poor, we will fall down with them eventually. (btw, I'm not a marxist--there are other ways of lifting up the poor) -Kate
I like this idea, of the spiritual world, nature, or however you want to call it bitting humanity in the ass. Many spiritual faiths predict some kind of spiritual or natural turn-around, and now seems to be the best time for such a change or awakening. I would love to personaly witness the change of the world, the end, or a new beginning.
Well if I knew a thread about this was already made, I wouldn't have made mine This won't kill all humankind, only the numbers that are too god damn stupid to do anything. That's about uh.....nearly 90% of the population? If you want to survive, start taking classes about living in Nature. Like what plants are edible. How to find good drinking water. How to skin animals to make warm clothes. How to start a fire with stones, and what stones you need. Etcetera etcetera... Consider this: before oil was first "manufactured", the Planet was home to a little over 1 billion people. The use of oil has brought the world's population to over 6 billion. What will happen to the people whom the Planet cannot feed and keep warm? They will die. Prepare yourselves now.
We must use the resorces we have now to plan for the future. Without what we have now, our chances of going further - onto clean technologies is slim.
