Hey guys, I'm pretty new to psych music, but I really like it and am looking to buy my first album. Could you guys suggest a good place to start? Thanks, Jon
60's psychedelic? Newer stuff? In my opinion start with the 13th Floor Elevator's, or Piper at The Gates of Dawn by Floyd. Moby Grape is real good too. Thats for starter's.
Thanks guys I looked up the 13th floor elevators and Sun Dial. They're both really awesome, Im gonna have to buy both albums
Early stuff: any early Floyd, Syd Barrett, if yoy want the harder stuff post '69 when some banda just turnd the amps UP...very early Black Sabbath, very early Deep Purple...then Count V, Moving Sidewalks, early Kinks...... Now stuff: Dolly Rocker Movement, Midnight Movies, Hope Sandoval, the Ropes.........just dig into Myspace and you'll find heaps of psych stuff!!!! PSYCHEDELIA IS IN WITH TYME BROTHER By blackglove at 2010-05-24
Not strictly pdychadelic, but MGMT are absoloutely amazing and have some 'different' sounds, if your unsure listen to 'electric feel' it's there worst one (which is still really awsome) and go from there....word of caution their new album Congradulations takes a bit of effort getting into but is worth it..............MGMT rule!!!
First of all, I'll start out with the BASICS of psychedelic rock in the 60's: Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Cream, Deep Purple, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin/Big Brother & the Holding Company, Steppenwolf, The Doors, The Who, Eric Burdon & the Animals, The Beatles(in certain albums), The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd's early work, Led Zeppelin, etc. (If you noticed, these are the most popular 60's psy-rock bands.) The less popular but still very famous psychedelic rock 60's bands: Ultimate Spinach, The 13th Floor Elevators, The Blues Magoos, The Peanut Butter Conspiracy, Strawberry Alarm Clock, Love, The Yardbirds, The Seeds, Donovan, The Zombies, Ten Years After, Santana, The Pretty Things, The Moody Blues, Iron Butterfly, The Electric Prunes, The Easybeats, Canned Heat, The Byrds(depending on the album, song, etc.), and more. Newer psy-rock bands would be Phish, Tool, Gov't Mule, Ekoostic Hookah, and more. (I know more new psychedelic rock bands but I can't really think of them at the moment.)

Remember people, there's a difference between psychedelic rock and progressive or alternative rock, even if you enjoy them the same on psychedelic drugs! And Pink Floyd's "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn" was my first psychedelic rock album, and it's a wise choice to listen to first or soon. Get the 3-disc edition with the mono version and the singles and alternate takes. "A Saucerful of Secrets" is also amazing. As an entire album, it's not flawless like "Piper..." and Syd Barrett's barely on the album, but every track is still psychedelic and most of the songs are masterpieces in and of themselves. Definitely the 13th Floor Elevators, although I'd download the discs from the sold-out "Sign of the 3-Eyed Men" boxset if I were you. I actually own it, but hey, they've been officially sold out for a long while now. Oh, and there's just so much more to discover!
Led Zeppelin weren't psychedelic, except for the song "Dazed and Confused", from what I know. And I've never heard Deep Purple being called psychedelic, although they must have had some really early work that was of that genre, considering when they formed. As for the "newer" stuff, they seem to be a mix of alternative, progressive and other rock, although Phish do, in addition, throw psychedelia into the mix.
Have you heard their really early work? Like 1969-1971. Can't tell me a lot of that isn't psychedelic. Like Led Zeppelin, their early stuff was psychedelic too. Mostly years 1968-1970. For example, their first ever album below below: Circa 1968. Well of course. I don't think you're ever going to find another psy-rock band like they were in the 60's. There's too many music genres out there; one of them is just bound to get into the music. It's not just pure psychedelia anymore, y'know? Everything is usually mixed in with bits and pieces of Jam band and alternative when it comes to modern day psychedelic rock.
10ish albums that are psychedelic (mind-expanding) to me not based on particular genre: The Beatles- Sgt.peppers lonely hearts club band Pink Floyd- Dark Side of the Moon (better) and Piper at the gates of dawn (trippier) Tool- Lateralus Jimi Hendrix- Are you experienced? (better) and Electric Ladyland (trippier) The Doors- The Doors Shpongle- Tales of the inexpressible Ott-Hallucinogen in Dub Shulman-In search of a Meaningful Moment Mgmt- Oracular Spectacular Mars Volta- Deloused in the Comatorium *Honorable mention: Radiohead-Kid A (This is an amazing album but it has a gloomy , disconnected feeling to it)
Actually, a lot of the bands you named aren't pure psychedelia neither. There are lots of psychedelic bands these days as well, just as psychedelic as the Doors (generally psychedelic blues rock) or Jefferson Airplane and certainly more psychedelic than Led Zep, Canned Heat or Deep Purple. There's lots of psych stuff out there man, and I don't mean jam bands like Phish and Ekoostic hookah or alternative stuff like Tool. http://www.hipforums.com/newforums/showthread.php?t=392352&page=3 As your attorney I advise you to listen to the songs in this thread.
I agree Zeppelin is not necessarily psychedelic but If you are one who downloads alot of music from iTunes opposed to buying albums you could make a fairly psychedelic Zeppelin compilation. Whole Lotta Love Dazed and Confused What is and what should never be No Quarter Dancing Days Misty Mountain Hop Traveling Riverside Blues In the light Thank you Kashmir Stairway to heaven(for good measure)
