Often we'll get teens coming on here proclaiming that they are hippies. Now, I can understand something about them. They've found a new culture that totally thrills them. They want to embrace it, they just don't know how. So tell me something. Why is it that when they find this place and they try to learn more (because they are so extatic) so many people on here tell them they're not hippies/they can't be a hippie/and hippies are stupid? It's just another sub-culture that came out of time of self-discovery. Tell me now...doesn't self-discovery happen everyday? Why is it impossible for them to be hippies now but in the 1960s it was perfectly ok? I just...don't understand the people's mentality that are MEMBERS of www.hippy.com and the HIP Forums.
I'm sure only a small percent on these forums would consider themselves to be hippies. Sure, it is HIP forums, but so what? This forum has amazing people and lots to talk about. That's the attraction for most of us. And because hippy was a fashion of the 60s, I've always considered the "true" ones (so to speak), to be part of a sub-culture, the "new left", whatever you wanna call it.
See, though, it wasn't only just a fashion. Fashion ruined it. That's what created the "Death of the Hippie." Hippie was a culture that got perverted by pop culture. That doesn't change the fact that it can still be a mindset and sub-culture.
That's my point. It wasn't always like that, but it sure caught on quickly. I know, but the word "hippie" is tainted by fashion, so I don't use it to descirbe people in the sub-culture. Just my personal preference.
Ok. Well then, titles of it aside. Why do people have a problem with teens who come on here not knowing theses things and just trying to find out more?
I think that "be accepting and help guide them in a positive manner?" is the way to go. As for your aside I like the line in Getting Straight were he answers the question "I thought you were a freak" by saying “I was man, I dropped out when they started wearing uniforms"
Very true We are just helping them along, in a way. Just that the most important things are the hardest to learn. It's not any easier teaching them either.
I think being excepting to all people should be the basis of peace. So my question for you is why do u consider yourself a hippie? When this sub-culture is built upon the need to have some more exceptance and peace in the world.
I think that most people on hipforums post in hipforums because they feel they can relate with other members. The beauty of hipforums is that we share a lot of opinions, fundamentally, but are diverse enough that we can maintain discussion. I don't consider myself a hippie, exactly--I don't really like labels, but I can relate to the principles of basic hippiedom. Thus, I post. I think it's narrow-minded to assume that people are incapable of accepting hippie principles/being a hippie simply because of their age. Hipiedom is a mindset, and people should be capable of being a hippie regardless of age. Furthermore, "hippie" is pretty much a name devised to describe a new subculture. I'm sure I've said this elsewhere: we have always had a hippie-like subculture, throughout history, so the young people now claiming to be hippies are just more people who have included themselves in this pool of sub-culturalists (is that a word?). Lastly, I'm a teenager, and I don't really care if people suggest that I can't be a hippy. I still post.
ganja, he doesn't. As a matter of fact, he used to post his hatred for hippies. Funny, too, because he was one of the first people I met in here and then, he was a "hippie."
kids who come on here asking what they are supposed to believe in, how they are supposed to dress, whether they are 'allowed' to wear makeup or not, what kind of music they should listen to, and if they HAVE to do drugs, are nothing but posers. i thought 'hippidom' was about being yourself, not trying to be something you're not.
I've not once ever called myself a "hippie." lmao I wasn't really being serious, but if you wanna cry about it, knock yerself out.
No, I did not. I remember you saying that I was a hippie, I did not say it. Don't remind me. I'm sorry.
